Journal ArticleDOI
Global precipitation measurement: Methods, datasets and applications
Francisco J. Tapiador,F. J. Turk,Walter A. Petersen,Arthur Y. Hou,Eduardo García-Ortega,Luiz A. T. Machado,Carlos F. Angelis,Paola Salio,Chris Kidd,Chris Kidd,George J. Huffman,Manuel Moreno de Castro +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of the many aspects of precipitation measurement that are relevant to providing an accurate global assessment of this important environmental parameter, including ground data, satellite estimates and numerical models.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global precipitation measurements for validating climate models
Francisco J. Tapiador,Andrés Navarro,Vincenzo Levizzani,Eduardo García-Ortega,George J. Huffman,Chris Kidd,Chris Kidd,Paul A. Kucera,Chris Kummerow,Hirohiko Masunaga,Walter A. Petersen,Rémy Roca,José Luis Sánchez,W.-K. Tao,F. J. Turk +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide guidance on the use of precipitation data sets for climate research, including model validation and verification for improving physical parameterizations, and a protocol for quality assurance of both observational databases and models is discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
An Evaluation of Microwave Land Surface Emissivities Over the Continental United States to Benefit GPM-Era Precipitation Algorithms
Ralph Ferraro,Christa D. Peters-Lidard,C. Hernandez,F. J. Turk,Filipe Aires,C. Prigent,Xin Lin,Sid-Ahmed Boukabara,Fumie A. Furuzawa,Kaushik Gopalan,Kenneth W. Harrison,Fatima Karbou,Li Li,Chuntao Liu,Hirohiko Masunaga,L. Moy,Sarah Ringerud,Gail Skofronick-Jackson,Yudong Tian,Nai-Yu Wang +19 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate that while the emissivity structure can be fairly well characterized for certain surface types, there are other more complex surfaces where the underlying variability is more than can be captured with the PMW channels and suggest that physical retrievals are feasible over vegetated land during the warm seasons.
Journal ArticleDOI
Satellite Precipitation Data–Driven Hydrological Modeling for Water Resources Management in the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna Basins
A. H. M. Siddique-E-Akbor,Faisal Hossain,Safat Sikder,C. K. Shum,Steven Tseng,Yuchan Yi,F. J. Turk,Ashutosh Limaye +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrological model was used for the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) river basin at spatial scales ranging from 125 to 25 km to generate daily fluxes of surface water availability.
Journal ArticleDOI
The activities of the international precipitation working group.
Vincenzo Levizzani,Chris Kidd,Chris Kidd,K. Aonashi,Ralf Bennartz,Ralf Bennartz,Ralph Ferraro,George J. Huffman,Rémy Roca,F. J. Turk,Nai-Yu Wang +10 more
TL;DR: The IPWG identifies critical issues, provides recommendations to the CGMS and supports upcoming precipitation‐oriented missions, and furthers the refinement of current estimation techniques and the development of new methodologies for improved global precipitation measurements.
