A Fundamental Relation Between Supermassive Black Holes and Their Host Galaxies

▪ Abstract At luminosities above 1011 , infrared galaxies become the dominant population of extragalactic objects in the local Universe (z ≲ 0.3), being more numerous than optically selected starburst and Seyfert galaxies and quasi-stellar objects at comparable bolometric luminosity. The trigger for the intense infrared emission appears to be the strong interaction/merger of molecular gas-rich spirals, and the bulk of the infrared luminosity for all but the most luminous objects is due to dust heating from an intense starburst within giant molecular clouds. At the highest luminosities (Lir > 1012 ), nearly all objects appear to be advanced mergers powered by a mixture of circumnuclear starburst and active galactic nucleus energy sources, both of which are fueled by an enormous concentration of molecular gas that has been funneled into the merger nucleus. Luminous infrared galaxies

We have modeled a large sample of infrared starburst galaxies using both the PEGASE v2.0 and STARBURST99 codes to generate the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the young star clusters. PEGASE utilizes the Padova group tracks, while STARBURST99 uses the Geneva group tracks, allowing comparison between the two. We used our MAPPINGS III code to compute photoionization models that include a self-consistent treatment of dust physics and chemical depletion. We use the standard optical diagnostic diagrams as indicators of the hardness of the EUV radiation field in these galaxies. These diagnostic diagrams are most sensitive to the spectral index of the ionizing radiation field in the 1-4 ryd region. We find that warm infrared starburst galaxies contain a relatively hard EUV field in this region. The PEGASE ionizing stellar continuum is harder in the 1-4 ryd range than that of STARBURST99. As the spectrum in this regime is dominated by emission from Wolf-Rayet (W-R) stars, this discrepancy is most likely due to the differences in stellar atmosphere models used for the W-R stars. The PEGASE models use the Clegg & Middlemass planetary nebula nuclei (PNN) atmosphere models for the W-R stars, whereas the STARBURST99 models use the Schmutz, Leitherer, & Gruenwald W-R atmosphere models. We believe that the Schmutz et al. atmospheres are more applicable to the starburst galaxies in our sample; however, they do not produce the hard EUV field in the 1-4 ryd region required by our observations. The inclusion of continuum metal blanketing in the models may be one solution. Supernova remnant (SNR) shock modeling shows that the contribution by mechanical energy from SNRs to the photoionization models is 20%. The models presented here are used to derive a new theoretical classification scheme for starbursts and active galactic nucleus (AGN) galaxies based on the optical diagnostic diagrams.

Theoretical Modeling of Starburst Galaxies

We present an analysis of the host properties of 85224 emission-line galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We show that Seyferts and LINERs form clearly separated branches on the standard optical diagnostic diagrams. We derive a new empirical classification scheme which cleanly separates star-forming galaxies, composite AGN-H ii galaxies, Seyferts and LINERs and we study the host galaxy properties of these different classes of objects. LINERs are older, more massive, less dusty and more concentrated, and they and have higher velocity dispersions and lower [OIII] luminosities than Seyfert galaxies. Seyferts and LINERs are most strongly distinguished by their [OIII] luminosities. We then consider the quantity L[OIII]/σ 4 , which is an indicator of the black hole accretion rate relative to the Eddington rate. Remarkably, we find that at fixed L[OIII]/σ 4 , all differences between Seyfert and LINER host properties disappear. LINERs and Seyferts form a continuous sequence, with LINERs dominant at low L/LEDD and Seyferts dominant at high L/LEDD . These results suggest that the majority of LINERs are AGN and that the Seyfert/LINER dichotomy is analogous to the high/low-state transition for X-ray binary systems. We apply theoretical photo-ionization models and show that pure LINERs require a harder ionizing radiation field with lower ionization parameter than Seyfert galaxies, consistent with the low and high X-ray binary states.

Results are reported from optical, long-slit interferometry, narrow-band imaging and VLA radiotelescope scans of 43 radio galaxies. The strongest radio galaxies (log P at 408 MHz exceeding 25.5 W/Hz for a Hubble parameter of 75 km/sec per MPC) displayed the most distinct optical morphologies, e.g., bridges, fans, dust features, etc. The sources also emitted continuum lines and other line features which were morphologically distinct from the source regions, conditions which suggest that collisions between galaxies occurred. Other characteristics of the strong radio galaxies are discussed, including lowered optical luminosities, reduced galactic densities, and an absence of edge-darkened radio morphologies. 101 references.

Emission-line profiles and kinematics of the narrow-line region in Seyfert and radio galaxies

We investigate the color-magnitude (CM) relation of galaxies in the distant X-ray selected cluster RDCS1252.9-2927 at z=1.24 using images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope in the F775W and F850LP bandpasses. We select galaxies based on morphological classifications extending about 3.5 mag down the galaxy luminosity function, augmented by spectroscopic membership information. At the core of the cluster is an extensive early-type galaxy population surrounding a central pair of galaxies that show signs of dynamical interaction. The early-type population defines a tight sequence in the CM diagram, with an intrinsic scatter in observed (i-z) of $0.029\pm0.007$ mag based on 52 galaxies, or $0.024\pm0.008$ mag for $\sim30$ ellipticals. Simulations using the latest stellar population models indicate an age scatter for the ellipticals of about 34%, with a mean age $\taul\gta2.6$ Gyr (corresponding to $z_L\gta2.7$), and the last star formation occurring at $z_{end}\gta1.5$. Transforming to rest-frame $(U-B)$, we conclude that the slope and scatter in the CM relation for morphologically selected early-type galaxies show little or no evidence for evolution out to $z\approx1.2$. Thus, elliptical galaxies were already well established in X-ray luminous clusters when the universe was a third of its present age.

Advanced Camera for Surveys Photometry of the Cluster RDCS1252.9-2927: The Color-Magnitude Relation at z=1.24

We present the analysis of the faint galaxy population in the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Early Release Observation fields VV 29 (UGC 10214) and NGC 4676. Here we attempt to thoroughly consider all aspects relevant for faint galaxy counting and photometry, developing methods which are based on public software and that are easily reproducible by other astronomers. Using simulations we determine the best SExtractor parameters for the detection of faint galaxies in deep HST observations, paying special attention to the issue of deblending, which significantly affects the normalization and shape of the number count distribution. We confirm, as claimed by Bernstein, Freedman and Madore (2002), that Kron-like magnitudes, such as the ones generated by SExtractor, can miss more than half of the light of faint galaxies, what dramatically affects the slope of the number counts. We present catalogs for the VV 29 and NGC 4676 fields with photometry in the g,V and I bands. We also show that combining the bayesian software BPZ with superb ACS data and new spectral templates enables us to estimate reliable photometric redshifts for a significant fraction of galaxies with as few as three filters. After correcting for selection effects, we measure slopes of 0.32+- 0.01 for 22 25.5 can be well approximated in all our filters by a passive luminosity evolution model based on the COMBO-17 luminosity function (\alpha=-1.5), with a strong merging rate following the prescription of Glazebrook et al. (1994), \phi^*\propto (1+Qz), with Q=4.
