Journal ArticleDOI
The Relative Contribution of Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum Infections to the Infectious Reservoir in a Low-Endemic Setting in Ethiopia.
Fitsum G. Tadesse,Fitsum G. Tadesse,Hannah C Slater,Wakweya Chali,Karina Teelen,Kjerstin Lanke,Mulualem Belachew,Temesgen Menberu,Girma Shumie,Getasew Shitaye,Lucy C Okell,Wouter Graumans,Geert-Jan van Gemert,Soriya Kedir,Addisu Tesfaye,Feleke Belachew,Wake Abebe,Hassen Mamo,Robert W. Sauerwein,Taye Tolera Balcha,Taye Tolera Balcha,Abraham Aseffa,Delenasaw Yewhalaw,Endalamaw Gadisa,Chris Drakeley,Teun Bousema,Teun Bousema +26 more
TL;DR: In this low-endemic setting aiming for malaria elimination, asymptomatic infections were highly prevalent and responsible for the majority of onward mosquito infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum Pfcrt and Pfmdr1 alleles in settings with different levels of Plasmodium vivax co-endemicity in Ethiopia
Elifaged Hailemeskel,Temesgen Menberu,Girma Shumie,Sinknesh Wolde Behaksra,Wakweya Chali,Migbaru Keffale,Mulualem Belachew,Getasew Shitaye,Hussien Mohammed,Daniel Abebe,Temesgen Ashine,Chris Drakeley,Hassen Mamo,Beyene Petros,Teun Bousema,Fitsum G. Tadesse,Endalamaw Gadisa +16 more
TL;DR: The observed high level of the mutant Pfcrt-76T allele in P. vivax co- endemic sites might require that utilization of CQ needs to be re-evaluated in settings co-endemic for the two species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low and heterogeneous prevalence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in different settings in Ethiopia using phenotyping and genotyping approaches.
Getasew Shitaye,Endalamaw Gadisa,Lynn Grignard,Girma Shumie,Wakweya Chali,Temesgen Menberu,Mulualem Belachew,Getaneh Tegegn,Sagni Challi,Jonathan Curry,Laleta Mahey,Tsegaye Hailu,Hassen Mamo,Menakath Menon,Taye Tolera Balcha,Abraham Aseffa,Chris Drakeley,Teun Bousema,Teun Bousema,Fitsum G. Tadesse,Fitsum G. Tadesse +20 more
TL;DR: A very low prevalence of G6PDd was detected in the present study populations, and the presence of the African variant (A−) was detected for the first time in the Ethiopian population, indicating that larger studies specifically designed to unravel the distribution of G 6PDd at small geographical scale may be needed to tailor malaria elimination efforts in Ethiopia to the local context.
Journal ArticleDOI
The epidemiology and detectability of asymptomatic Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum infections in low, moderate and high transmission settings in Ethiopia
Elifaged Hailemeskel,Surafel K Tebeje,Sinknesh Wolde Behaksra,Girma Shumie,Getasew Shitaye,Migbaru Keffale,Wakweya Chali,Abrham Gashaw,Temesgen Ashine,Chris Drakeley,Teun Bousema,Teun Bousema,Endalamaw Gadisa,Fitsum G. Tadesse,Fitsum G. Tadesse +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the epidemiology and detectability of asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum infection in different transmission settings in Ethiopia using 1093 dried blood spot (DBS) samples collected from afebrile and apparently healthy individuals across ten study sites in Ethiopia from 2016 to 2020.
Journal ArticleDOI
Level of food consumption score and associated factors among pregnant women at SHEGAW MOTTA hospital, Northwest Ethiopia.
TL;DR: In this paper, an institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among pregnant women attending antenatal care service at Shegaw Motta Hospital, East Gojjam Zone, Northwest Ethiopia.
