The Relative Contribution of Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum Infections to the Infectious Reservoir in a Low-Endemic Setting in Ethiopia.
Fitsum G. Tadesse,Fitsum G. Tadesse,Hannah C Slater,Wakweya Chali,Karina Teelen,Kjerstin Lanke,Mulualem Belachew,Temesgen Menberu,Girma Shumie,Getasew Shitaye,Lucy C Okell,Wouter Graumans,Geert-Jan van Gemert,Soriya Kedir,Addisu Tesfaye,Feleke Belachew,Wake Abebe,Hassen Mamo,Robert W. Sauerwein,Taye Tolera Balcha,Taye Tolera Balcha,Abraham Aseffa,Delenasaw Yewhalaw,Endalamaw Gadisa,Chris Drakeley,Teun Bousema,Teun Bousema +26 more
TL;DR: In this low-endemic setting aiming for malaria elimination, asymptomatic infections were highly prevalent and responsible for the majority of onward mosquito infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intensified tuberculosis case-finding in HIV-positive adults managed at Ethiopian health centers: diagnostic yield of Xpert MTB/RIF compared with smear microscopy and liquid culture.
Taye Tolera Balcha,Erik Sturegård,Niclas Winqvist,Sten Skogmar,Anton Reepalu,Zelalem Habtamu Jemal,Gudeta Tibesso,Thomas B. Schön,Per Björkman +8 more
TL;DR: Xpert MTB/RIF increased TB case detection, especially in patients with advanced immunosuppression, and an algorithm based on the use of a single morningSputum sample for individuals with negative sputum smear microscopy could be considered for intensified case finding in patients eligible for ART.
Journal ArticleDOI
Barriers to Antiretroviral Treatment in Ethiopia: A Qualitative Study:
TL;DR: Ethiopia has made meaningful headway in improving access to HIV care and treatment but client attrition remains a daunting challenge, and the finding clearly illustrated that while financial constraints and some sociocultural factors impede adherence, disclosure, community support, and decentralization of ART to primary health care units enhance retention in care andtreatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection of lipoarabinomannan in urine for identification of active tuberculosis among HIV-positive adults in Ethiopian health centres
Taye Tolera Balcha,Niclas Winqvist,Erik Sturegård,Sten Skogmar,Anton Reepalu,Zelalem Habtamu Jemal,Gudeta Tibesso,Thomas B. Schön,Thomas B. Schön,Per Björkman +9 more
TL;DR: To assess the diagnostic performance of urine lipoarabinomannan (LAM) detection for TB screening in HIV‐positive adults in Ethiopia, a large number of adults have been diagnosed with HIV.
Journal ArticleDOI
CD4 Cell Levels during Treatment for Tuberculosis (TB) in Ethiopian Adults and Clinical Markers Associated with CD4 Lymphocytopenia
Sten Skogmar,Thomas B. Schön,Taye Tolera Balcha,Zelalem Habtamu Jemal,Gudeta Tibesso,Jonas Björk,Per Björkman +6 more
TL;DR: The continuous increase of CD4 cell counts during the course of ATT suggest a reversible impact of active TB onCD4 cell homeostasis, which may be considered in interpretation of CD 4 cell counts in HIV/TB co-infected subjects.
