The Enzymatic Oxidation of Graphene Oxide
Gregg P. Kotchey,Brett L. Allen,Harindra Vedala,Naveena Yanamala,Alexander A. Kapralov,Yulia Y. Tyurina,Judith Klein-Seetharaman,Valerian E. Kagan,Alexander Star +8 more
TL;DR: The enzymatic oxidation of a single layer of graphitic carbon by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) resulted in the formation of holes on its basal plane, which rendered hRGO, which can be conceptualized as interconnected graphene nanoribbons, as a potentially attractive material for FET sensors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanistic investigations of horseradish peroxidase-catalyzed degradation of single-walled carbon nanotubes.
Brett L. Allen,Gregg P. Kotchey,Yanan Chen,Naveena Yanamala,Judith Klein-Seetharaman,Valerian E. Kagan,Alexander Star +6 more
TL;DR: It was observed that pristine SWNTs demonstrate no degradation with HRP incubation but display significant degradation when incubated with either hemin or FeCl(3), which may signify a heterolytic cleavage of H(2)O( 2) withHRP as pristine nanotubes do not degrade, whereas Fenton catalysis results in the homolyticCleavage producing free radicals that oxidize pristineSWNTs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adsorption of surfactant lipids by single-walled carbon nanotubes in mouse lung upon pharyngeal aspiration
Alexander A. Kapralov,Wei Hong Feng,Andrew A. Amoscato,Naveena Yanamala,Krishnakumar Balasubramanian,Daniel E. Winnica,Elena R. Kisin,Gregg P. Kotchey,Pingping Gou,Louis J. Sparvero,Prabir Ray,Rama K. Mallampalli,Judith Klein-Seetharaman,Bengt Fadeel,Alexander Star,Anna A. Shvedova,Valerian E. Kagan +16 more
TL;DR: This is the first demonstration of the in vivo adsorption of the surfactant lipids and proteins on SWCNTs in a physiologically relevant animal model and it is demonstrated that the presence of this Surfactant coating markedly enhanced the in vitro uptake of SWC NTs by macrophages.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chemical sensitivity of graphene edges decorated with metal nanoparticles.
TL;DR: This work reports the fabrication of nanosensors based on holey reduced graphene oxide (hRGO), which can be visualized as interconnected graphene nanoribbons and proposes that the increased edge-to-plane ratio, oxygen moieties, and Pt nanoparticle decoration were responsible for the observed gas sensing with hRGO nanostructures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biodegradation of Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Eosinophil Peroxidase
Fernando Torres Andón,Alexandr A. Kapralov,Naveena Yanamala,Weihong Feng,Arjang Baygan,Benedict J. Chambers,Kjell Hultenby,Fei Ye,Muhammet S. Toprak,Birgit D. Brandner,Andrea Fornara,Judith Klein-Seetharaman,Gregg P. Kotchey,Alexander Star,Anna A. Shvedova,Anna A. Shvedova,Bengt Fadeel,Valerian E. Kagan +17 more
TL;DR: Human EPO (in vitro) and ex vivo activated eosinophils mediate biodegradation of SWCNTs: an observation that is relevant to pulmonary responses to these materials.
