This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. The 2008 crash has left all the established economic doctrines - equilibrium models, real business cycles, disequilibria models - in disarray. Part of the problem is due to Smith’s "veil of ignorance": individuals unknowingly pursue society’s interest and, as a result, have no clue as to the macroeconomic effects of their actions: witness the Keynes and Leontief multipliers, the concept of value added, fiat money, Engel’s law and technical progress, to name but a few of the macrofoundations of microeconomics. A good viewpoint to take bearings anew lies in comparing the post-Great Depression institutions with those emerging from Thatcher and Reagan’s economic policies: deregulation, exogenous vs. endoge- nous money, shadow banking vs. Volcker’s Rule. Very simply, the banks, whose lending determined deposits after Roosevelt, and were a public service became private enterprises whose deposits determine lending. These underlay the great moderation preceding 2006, and the subsequent crash.

The Theory of Industrial Organization

Participants of economic transactions are assumed to make decisions based on objective directly related to the transactions. This paper shows that, aside from biases and cognitive limitations, they may have also other objectives. Using results of online experiments with reverse auctions and multi-bilateral negotiations we confirm results reported earlier for the case of bilateral negotiations, namely that three and four types of objectives can be identified. Based on the objectives' importance distinct groups of participants have been identified, they differ in their behavior and the outcomes they achieve. The results indicate that some bidders and negotiators want to achieve other than substantive objectives and are willing to trade off substantive for relational objectives.

Outlooks and Insights on Group Decision and Negotiation

In this paper we consider the use of rules- and knowledge-based systems for the modelling of a broad class of decision problems. negoplan is a rule-based decision support tool, originally designed for negotiation support. We have used it to model processes with two participants, where the structure of the problem at any moment can be derived from the previous structure and decisions. We present negoplan +, an extension that allows us to model the decision processes of an autonomous agent in a randomly changing environment. Our case study is the exploratory mission of a robot collecting material on the surface of an unknown planet. We show how the static and dynamic aspects of the decision process can be modelled in negoplan +, and we discuss the wider implications of mechanisms available in our system.

Modelling of decision making for discrete processes in dynamic environments

Arno R. Lodder and John Zeleznikow: Enhanced Dispute Resolution Through the Use of Information Technology

An e-market system is a concrete implementation of a market institution; it embeds one or more exchange mechanisms. E-market systems are also information systems which are information and communication technologies artifacts. This work puts forward an argument that the study of e-markets must incorporate both the behavioral economics as well as the information systems perspectives. To this end the paper proposes a conceptual framework that integrates the two. This framework is used to formulate a model, which incorporates the essential features of exchange mechanisms, as well as their implementations as is artefacts. The focus of attention is on two classes of mechanisms, namely auctions and negotiations. They both may serve the same purpose and their various types have been embedded in many e-market systems.
