TL;DR: Malignancy, heart failure, heavy drinking, preceding infection, type 1 diabetes, increasing age, and large artery atherosclerosis causing the index stroke independently predicted 5-year mortality adjusted for age, gender, relevant risk factors, stroke severity, and etiologic subtype.
