The photocatalytic activity of bimetallic co-doped g-C3N4 can be boosted dramatically, whereas the enhanced mechanisms essentially have been rarely revealed. Here, the prepared Co/V co-doped g-C3N4 significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity. The degradation rate constant and TOC removal efficiency of TC−HCl in 120 min over the Co/V-g-C3N4-2 sample run up to 4.00 and 2.45 times as much as that of g-C3N4, respectively. The outstanding photocatalytic performance is attributed to the improved charge separation efficiency and visible-light harvest ability. The density functional theory (DFT) investigations reveal the incorporation of Co/V into g-C3N4 can induce the bimetallic synergetic regulating effect on electronic structure, which results in improving the physical, optical and photoelectrochemical properties. Moreover, the significant degradation intermediates, pathway and mechanism of TC−HCl, and charge transfer behaviors are also discussed in depth. This work provides a meritorious instance to design and synthesize new bimetallic co-doped g-C3N4 materials in the photocatalytic application field.

The assembly of cocatalysts on a semiconductor is a key way to promote the activity in solar hydrogen production. This process can be realized by anchoring metal complexes which can provide catalytically active sites. Despite the most recent advances, the performances and cycling stability of metal complex/semiconductor composite catalysts are still hindered by their poor contact or linkage. Herein, a series of metal complexes, such as [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2, [Ni(NH3)6]Cl2, and [Cu(NH3)4](OH)2, are anchored on TiO2 (B) nanosheets via a facile controllable electrostatic adsorption route. The resultant TiO2 (B) composites exhibit significantly enhanced activity and stability in photocatalytic hydrogen production compared to the blank TiO2 (B) counterpart. The [Co(NH3)5Cl]2+–TiO2 (B) composite achieves a high activity of 3.9 mmol g−1 after 8 h (with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 249 h−1), which is about 57% of that of the benchmark Pt-loaded TiO2 (B) catalyst. Further experimental and theoretical studies confirm that the strong contact between metal complexes with TiO2 (B) can facilitate photoexcited electron transfer and separation, which is responsible for the improved activity. Desorption of hydrogen atoms from ammonium in metal complexes is kinetically favorable and they can accept photoexcited electrons to generate H2. This study can open up a promising pathway to synthesize high-performance metal complex anchored semiconductors by electrostatic adsorption.

Enhancement of photocatalytic H2 production by metal complex electrostatic adsorption on TiO2 (B) nanosheets

The invention discloses a preparation method and application of 2D-TiO2(B)/graphene efficient photocatalytic material. The preparation method includes the main steps of adding certain graphene (GR) into ethylene glycol, and dispersing and mixing well after ultrasonic treatment; under ice water bath, dropwise adding liquid TiCl4 into EG (ethylene glycol), and ultrasonically treating for 30-60 min to form colloidal TiO2(B)-GR precursor by hydrolysis; weighing certain TiO2(B)-GR precursor, adding into a beaker, adding deionized water into the solution in a volume ratio of 1:30 to 1:60, and stirring well to form TiO2(B)-GR precursor solution; subjecting the TiO2(B)-GR precursor solution to hydrothermal reaction in a sealed reactor at 130-170 DEG C for not longer than 6 hours, allowing reactingto occur to obtain a sample, flushing the sample alternately with anhydrous alcohol and deionized water 3-5 times, drying in a drying box at 100 DEG C to obtain 2D-TiO2(B)/graphene photocatalytic material; subjecting TGN (TiO2 graphene) to plasma sputtering in argon atmosphere for 0-60 min to obtain TGN plasma photocatalytic material. The material herein has large specific surface area and has ultrathin nano structure with certain photocatalytic activity; the preparation method is low in implementing cost, good in structural stability, good in operational convenience, and short in preparationcycle and is efficient and economical.
