Magnetic nanoparticles: design and characterization, toxicity and biocompatibility, pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

Various inorganic nanoparticles have been used as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents due to their unique properties, such as large surface area and efficient contrasting effect. Since the first use of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) as a liver contrast agent, nanoparticulate MRI contrast agents have attracted a lot of attention. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles have been extensively used as MRI contrast agents due to their ability to shorten T2* relaxation times in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. More recently, uniform ferrite nanoparticles with high crystallinity have been successfully employed as new T2 MRI contrast agents with improved relaxation properties. Iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized with targeting agents have been used for targeted imaging via the site-specific accumulation of nanoparticles at the targets of interest. Recently, extensive research has been conducted to develop nanoparticle-based T1 contrast agents to overcome the drawbacks of iron oxide nanoparticle-based negative T2 contrast agents. In this report, we summarize the recent progress in inorganic nanoparticle-based MRI contrast agents.

Inorganic Nanoparticles for MRI Contrast Agents

The current status of the use of nanoparticles for photothermal treatments is reviewed in detail. The different families of heating nanoparticles are described paying special attention to the physical mechanisms at the root of the light-to-heat conversion processes. The heating efficiencies and spectral working ranges are listed and compared. The most important results obtained in both in vivo and in vitro nanoparticle assisted photothermal treatments are summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of the different heating nanoparticles are discussed.

Nanoparticles for photothermal therapies.

Synthesis of multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles (MFMNPs) is one of the most active research areas in advanced materials. MFMNPs that have magnetic properties and other functionalities have been demonstrated to show great promise as multimodality imaging probes. Their multifunctional surfaces also allow rational conjugations of biological and drug molecules, making it possible to achieve target-specific diagnostics and therapeutics. This review first outlines the synthesis of MNPs of metal oxides and alloys and then focuses on recent developments in the fabrication of MFMNPs of core/shell, dumbbell, and composite hybrid type. It also summarizes the general strategies applied for NP surface functionalization. The review further highlights some exciting examples of these MFMNPs for multimodality imaging and for target-specific drug/gene delivery applications.

Synthesis, Functionalization, and Biomedical Applications of Multifunctional Magnetic Nanoparticles

Hybrid nanoparticles are of significant interest primarily because of their innate multifunctional capabilities. These capabilities can be exploited when hybrid nanoparticles are used for applications in the biomedical sciences in particular, where they are utilized as multimodal nanoplatforms for sensing, imaging, and therapy of biological targets. However, the realization of their biomedical applications has been difficult, in part because of a lack of high quality hybrid nanoparticles which possess high aqueous colloidal stability and biocompatibility while retaining their multifunctionalities. Here, we present the development of inorganic heterodimer nanoparticles of FePt−Au with multifunctional capabilities including catalytic growth effects, magnetic resonance (MR) contrast effects, optical signal enhancing properties, and high colloidal stability and biocompatibility. Surface modification of a six-capped body-centered cube Ni9W6 cluster: structure and single-molecule magnetism.

Two-step magnetic transitions: An azide-bridged 1D Mn(III) coordination polymer with a unique single end-on mode was prepared; it displayed atypical antiferromagnetic couplings and field-induced two-step magnetic transitions (see figure). The spin-canted phenomenon in the antiferromagnetic chain complex plays a pivotal role in establishing the slow magnetic relaxation.

An End‐On Azide‐Bridged Antiferromagnetic Single‐Chain Magnet Involving Spin Canting and Field‐Induced Two‐Step Magnetic Transitions

A Korean fusion energy development promotion law (FEDPL) was enacted in 2007. As a following step, a conceptual design study for a steady-state Korean fusion demonstration reactor (K-DEMO) was initiated in 2012. After the thorough 0D system analysis, the parameters of the main machine characterized by the major and minor radii of 6.8 and 2.1 m, respectively, were chosen for further study. The analyses of heating and current drives were performed for the development of the plasma operation scenarios. Preliminary results on lower hybrid and neutral beam current drive are included herein. A high performance Nb3Sn-based superconducting conductor is adopted, providing a peak magnetic field approaching 16 T with the magnetic field at the plasma centre above 7 T. Pressurized water is the prominent choice for the main coolant of K-DEMO when the balance of plant development details is considered. The blanket system adopts a ceramic pebble type breeder. Considering plasma performance, a double-null divertor is the reference configuration choice of K-DEMO. For a high availability operation, K-DEMO incorporates a design with vertical maintenance. A design concept for K-DEMO is presented together with the preliminary design parameters.

Design concept of K-DEMO for near-term implementation

Two manganese(III) azide complexes capped with tetradentate Schiff bases were characterized structurally and magnetically. The replacement of halogens on the Schiff bases leads to a drastic structural alteration from a dimer (1) bridged by phenoxide to a one-dimensional chain (2) linked by azide in a single end-to-end mode. Notably, magnetic studies of 2 show the concomitant existence of spin canting and metamagnetism.
