Randomized Trial of BCG Vaccination at Birth to Low-Birth-Weight Children: Beneficial Nonspecific Effects in the Neonatal Period?
Peter Aaby,Adam Roth,Adam Roth,Henrik Ravn,Bitiguida Mutna Napirna,Amabelia Rodrigues,Ida Maria Lisse,Lone Graff Stensballe,Birgitte Rode Diness,Karen Rokkedal Lausch,Najaaraq Lund,Sofie Biering-Sørensen,Hilton Whittle,Christine Stabell Benn,Christine Stabell Benn +14 more
TL;DR: Though early BCG did not reduce infant mortality significantly, it may have a beneficial effect in the neonatal period, which could be important for public health because BCG is often delayed in low-income countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vitamin D as supplementary treatment for tuberculosis: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
Christian Wejse,Victor F Gomes,Paulo Rabna,Per Gustafson,Peter Aaby,Ida Maria Lisse,Paul L. Andersen,Henning Glerup,Morten Sodemann +8 more
TL;DR: Vitamin D does not improve clinical outcome among patients with tuberculosis and the trial showed no overall effect on mortality in patients with TB; it is possible that the dose used was insufficient.
Journal ArticleDOI
BCG scar and positive tuberculin reaction associated with reduced child mortality in West Africa. A non-specific beneficial effect of BCG?
May-Lill Garly,Cesário Lourenco Martins,Carlitos Balé,Mamadu Aliu Baldé,Kathryn Hedegaard,Per Gustafson,Ida Maria Lisse,Hilton Whittle,Peter Aaby +8 more
TL;DR: BCG scar and a positive tuberculin reaction were associated with better survival in early childhood in an area with high mortality, suggesting that the effect of BCG vaccination could be due to non-specific immune-stimulation protecting against other infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Non-specific effects of standard measles vaccine at 4.5 and 9 months of age on childhood mortality: randomised controlled trial
Peter Aaby,Cesario Martins,May-Lill Garly,Carlito Balé,Andreas Andersen,Amabelia Rodrigues,Henrik Ravn,Ida Maria Lisse,Christine Stabell Benn,Hilton Whittle +9 more
TL;DR: The results may indicate that a two dose schedule with Edmonston-Zagreb measles vaccine given at 4.5 and 9 months of age has beneficial non-specific effects on children’s survival, particularly for girls and for children who have not received neonatal vitamin A.
Journal ArticleDOI
Investigation of the risk factors for tuberculosis: a case–control study in three countries in West Africa
Christian Lienhardt,Katherine Fielding,Jackson Sillah,Boubacar Bah,Per Gustafson,D. K. Warndorff,M Palayew,Ida Maria Lisse,Simon Donkor,Souleymane Diallo,Kebba Manneh,Richard A. Adegbola,Peter Aaby,Oumou Bah-Sow,Steve Bennett,Keith P. W. J. McAdam +15 more
TL;DR: TB is a multifactorial disorder, in which environment interacts with host-related factors, which provides useful information for the assessment of host and environmental factors of TB for the improvement of TB control activities in developing countries.
