Journal ArticleDOI
Biodiversity and climate determine the functioning of neotropical forests.
Lourens Poorter,Masha T. van der Sande,Eric Arets,Nataly Ascarrunz,Brian J. Enquist,Bryan Finegan,Juan Carlos Licona,Miguel Martínez-Ramos,Lucas Mazzei,Jorge A. Meave,Rodrigo Muñoz,Christopher J. Nytch,Alexandre Adalardo de Oliveira,Eduardo A. Pérez-García,Jamir Prado-Junior,Jorge Rodríguez-Velazques,Ademir Roberto Ruschel,Beatriz Salgado-Negret,Ivan Schiavini,Nathan G. Swenson,Elkin A. Tenorio,Jill Thompson,Marisol Toledo,María Uriarte,Peter van der Hout,Jess K. Zimmerman,Marielos Peña-Claros +26 more
TL;DR: In this article, the relative importance of environmental factors and forest attributes for ecosystem functioning, especially for the tropics, was investigated for the Neotropics, where water availability has a strong positive effect on biomass stocks and growth, and a future predicted increase in (atmospheric) drought might reduce carbon storage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Conservative species drive biomass productivity in tropical dry forests
Jamir Prado-Junior,Jamir Prado-Junior,Ivan Schiavini,Vagner Santiago do Vale,Carolina de Silvério Arantes,Masha T. van der Sande,Madelon Lohbeck,Madelon Lohbeck,Lourens Poorter +8 more
TL;DR: Initial stand biomass was the best predictor of all three processes of biomass dynamics, providing strong support for the vegetation quantity hypothesis, and no support for niche complementarity (in terms of functional diversity or species richness) for forest productivity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecologia morfofuncional de plântulas de espécies arbóreas da Estação Ecológica do Panga, Uberlândia, Minas Gerais
TL;DR: The results demonstrated that morphology has, at least in early stages, a determinant role in the processes of tree seedling establishment and development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relação entre distribuição de espécies arbóreas e topografia em um gradiente florestal na Estação Ecológica do Panga (Uberlândia, MG)
Edivane Cardoso,Ivan Schiavini +1 more
TL;DR: The overlay of topographic and species distribution maps showed that species may be or are dependent, tolerant or intolerant to different levels of soil hydric saturation related to variations of topography.
Journal ArticleDOI
An Ecological Comparison of Floristic Composition in Seasonal Semideciduous Forest in Southeast Brazil: Implications for Conservation
TL;DR: Floristic patterns of ten seasonal semideciduous forest sites in southeastern Brazil and a central sampling of one hectare for each site revealed that similarities between studied fragments were due mainly to the successional stage of the community.
