TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a structural equation model to test the hypothesis that species richness, forest structural attributes and environmental drivers have independent, positive effects on aboveground biomass (AGB) and ecosystem functioning.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: This work assesses how tree species richness and composition recover during secondary succession across gradients in environmental conditions and anthropogenic disturbance in an unprecedented multisite analysis for the Neotropics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Does functional trait diversity predict above‐ground biomass and productivity of tropical forests? Testing three alternative hypotheses
Bryan Finegan,Marielos Peña-Claros,Alexandre Adalardo de Oliveira,Nataly Ascarrunz,M. Syndonia Bret-Harte,Geovana Carreño-Rocabado,Fernando Casanoves,Sandra Díaz,Paul Eguiguren Velepucha,Fernando Fernández,Juan Carlos Licona,Leda Lorenzo,Beatriz Salgado Negret,Marcel C. Vaz,Lourens Poorter +14 more
TL;DR: CWM Hmax is a strong driver of ecosystem biomass and carbon storage and CWM SLA, and other CWM leaf traits are especially important for biomass increments and carbon sequestration, and strong support for the biomass ratio hypothesis is found.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecosystem services research in Latin America: The state of the art
Patricia Balvanera,María Uriarte,Lucia Almeida-Leñero,Alice Altesor,Fabrice DeClerck,Toby A. Gardner,Jefferson S. Paruelo,Jesús Emilio Peinado,Lourens Poorter,Nataly Ascarrunz,Francisco Correa,Marcela Bianchessi da Cunha-Santino,Amabel Paula Hernández-Sánchez,María Vallejos +26 more
TL;DR: Ecosystem services science has developed at a fast rate in Latin America, a region characterized by a high biological and cultural diversity, strong emphasis in foreign investment, and high socioeconomic conditions as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biodiversity and climate determine the functioning of neotropical forests.
Lourens Poorter,Masha T. van der Sande,Eric Arets,Nataly Ascarrunz,Brian J. Enquist,Bryan Finegan,Juan Carlos Licona,Miguel Martínez-Ramos,Lucas Mazzei,Jorge A. Meave,Rodrigo Muñoz,Christopher J. Nytch,Alexandre Adalardo de Oliveira,Eduardo A. Pérez-García,Jamir Prado-Junior,Jorge Rodríguez-Velazques,Ademir Roberto Ruschel,Beatriz Salgado-Negret,Ivan Schiavini,Nathan G. Swenson,Elkin A. Tenorio,Jill Thompson,Marisol Toledo,María Uriarte,Peter van der Hout,Jess K. Zimmerman,Marielos Peña-Claros +26 more
TL;DR: In this article, the relative importance of environmental factors and forest attributes for ecosystem functioning, especially for the tropics, was investigated for the Neotropics, where water availability has a strong positive effect on biomass stocks and growth, and a future predicted increase in (atmospheric) drought might reduce carbon storage.
