The major increase in discharge duration and plasma energy in a next step DT fusion reactor will give rise to important plasma-material effects that will critically influence its operation, safety and performance. Erosion will increase to a scale of several centimetres from being barely measurable at a micron scale in today's tokamaks. Tritium co-deposited with carbon will strongly affect the operation of machines with carbon plasma facing components. Controlling plasma-wall interactions is critical to achieving high performance in present day tokamaks, and this is likely to continue to be the case in the approach to practical fusion reactors. Recognition of the important consequences of these phenomena stimulated an internationally co-ordinated effort in the field of plasma-surface interactions supporting the Engineering Design Activities of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project (ITER), and significant progress has been made in better understanding these issues. The paper reviews the underlying physical processes and the existing experimental database of plasma-material interactions both in tokamaks and laboratory simulation facilities for conditions of direct relevance to next step fusion reactors. Two main topical groups of interaction are considered: (i) erosion/redeposition from plasma sputtering and disruptions, including dust and flake generation and (ii) tritium retention and removal. The use of modelling tools to interpret the experimental results and make projections for conditions expected in future devices is explained. Outstanding technical issues and specific recommendations on potential R&D avenues for their resolution are presented.

Hydrogen isotope retention and recycling in fusion reactor plasma-facing components

Interactions between the plasma and the vessel walls constitute a major engineering problem for next step fusion devices, such as ITER, determining the choice of the plasma-facing materials. A prominent issue in this choice is the tritium inventory build-up in the vessel, which must be limited for safety reasons. The initial material selection, i.e. beryllium (Be) on the main vessel walls, tungsten (W) on the divertor upper baffle and dome, and carbon fibre composite around the strike points on the divertor plates, results both from the attempt to reduce the tritium inventory and to optimize the lifetime of the plasma-facing components.In the framework of the EU Task Force on Plasma?Wall Interaction (PWI TF), the many physics aspects governing the tritium inventory are brought together. Together with supporting information from international experts represented by the ITPA SOL/DIV section, this paper describes the present status of knowledge of the in-vessel tritium inventory build-up. Firstly, the main results from present fusion devices in this field are briefly reviewed. Then, the processes involved are discussed: implantation, trapping and diffusion in plasma-facing materials are considered as well as surface erosion and co-deposition of tritium with eroded material. The intermixing of the different materials and its influence on hydrogen retention and co-deposition is a major source of uncertainty on present estimates and is also addressed.Based on the previous considerations, estimates for the tritium inventory build-up are given for the initial choice of ITER materials, as well as for alternative options. Present estimates indicate a build-up of the tritium inventory to the administrative limit within a few hundred nominal full power D?:?T discharges, co-deposition with carbon being the dominant process. Therefore, tritium removal methods are also an active area of research within the EU PWI TF, and are discussed. An integrated operational scheme to slow the rate of tritium accumulation is presented, which includes plasma operation as well as conditioning procedures.

Tritium inventory in ITER plasma-facing materials and tritium removal procedures

The ITER project development has shown that considerable difficulties are encountered when already known engineering solutions and materials are used for divertor and divertor plates for tokamaks of such a scale. We offer to use a Li capillary-pore system (CPS) as a plasma facing material for tokamak divertor. Evaporated Li serves as a gas target and redistributes thermal load. The heat flux from the plasma is transported to the first wall by Li radiation in the plasma periphery. This allows the divertor plate to reduce the heat flux. A solid CPS filled with liquid lithium has a high resistance to surface damage in the stationary mode and during plasma transitions (disruptions, ELMs, VDEs, runaways) to assure normal operation of the divertor target plates. These materials are not the sources of impurities giving rise to Zeff and they will not be collected as dust in the divertor area and in ducts. Experiments with lithium CPS in a steady-state mode (up to 25 MW m-2) and in plasma disruption simulation conditions (~5 MJ m-2, ~0.5 ms) have been performed. High stability of these systems have been shown. Li limiter tests on T-11M tokamak have revealed the lithium CPS compatibility with the edge plasma for energy loads of up to 10 MW m-2. In a stable discharge mode at lithium limiter temperature of 20-600°C, no Li abnormal erosion and injection to plasma have been detected. A high sorption of D+ and H+ ions on the vessel walls was the main substantial result of the replacement of a graphite limiter by lithium one. He and D sorption was terminated by wall heating up to 50-100°C and above 350°C, respectively. T-11 tests on helium discharge allowed to reduce limiter heat load by a factor of two due to lithium radiation. All the experimental results have shown considerable progress in the development of lithium divertor.

Lithium divertor concept and results of supporting experiments

The evaluation of hydrogenic retention in present tokamaks is of crucial importance to estimate the expected tritium (T) vessel inventory in ITER, limited from safety considerations to 350 g. In the framework of the European Task Force on Plasma Wall Interaction (EU TF on PWI) efforts are underway to investigate gas balance and fuel retention during discharges, and to compare the data obtained with those from post-mortem analysis of in-vessel components exposed over whole experimental campaigns. This paper summarizes the principal findings from coordinated studies on gas balance and fuel retention from a number of European tokamaks, namely, ASDEX-Upgrade (AUG), JET, TEXTOR and Tore Supra (TS). For most devices, the long-term retention fraction deduced from integrated particle balance is ∼10–20%. This is larger than the ∼3–4% deduced from post-mortem analysis of plasma facing components (PFCs). However, from the database available for tokamaks with their main PFCs made of carbon, the important conclusion is that the T inventory limit (set by the working guideline for operations) could be reached in ITER within fewer than 100 discharges. This, therefore, would seriously impact on operation of the device unless efficient T removal processes are developed.
