Journal ArticleDOI
Efficacy and safety of a paired sedation and ventilator weaning protocol for mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care (Awakening and Breathing Controlled trial): a randomised controlled trial
Timothy D. Girard,John P. Kress,Barry D. Fuchs,Jason W. W. Thomason,William D. Schweickert,Brenda T. Pun,Darren B. Taichman,Jan Dunn,Anne S. Pohlman,Paul Kinniry,James C. Jackson,Angelo E. Canonico,Richard W. Light,Ayumi Shintani,Jennifer L. Thompson,Sharon M. Gordon,Sharon M. Gordon,Jesse B. Hall,Robert S. Dittus,Robert S. Dittus,Gordon R. Bernard,E. Wesley Ely,E. Wesley Ely +22 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that a wake up and breathe protocol that pairs daily spontaneous awakening trials (ie, interruption of sedatives) with daily spontaneous breathing trials results in better outcomes for mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care than current standard approaches and should become routine practice.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-Term Cognitive Impairment After Critical Illness

Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Sedation With Dexmedetomidine vs Lorazepam on Acute Brain Dysfunction in Mechanically Ventilated Patients: The MENDS Randomized Controlled Trial
Pratik P. Pandharipande,Brenda T. Pun,Daniel Herr,Mervyn Maze,Timothy D. Girard,Russell R. Miller,Ayumi Shintani,Jennifer L. Thompson,James C. Jackson,Stephen A. Deppen,Renée A. Stiles,Robert S. Dittus,Gordon R. Bernard,E. Wesley Ely +13 more
TL;DR: In mechanically ventilated ICU patients managed with individualized targeted sedation, use of a dexmedetomidine infusion resulted in more days alive without delirium or coma and more time at the targeted level of sedation than with a lorazepam infusion.
Journal ArticleDOI
Delirium as a predictor of long-term cognitive impairment in survivors of critical illness
Timothy D. Girard,James C. Jackson,Pratik P. Pandharipande,Brenda T. Pun,Jennifer L. Thompson,Ayunni K. Shintani,Sharon M. Gordon,Angelo E. Canonico,Robert S. Dittus,Gordon R. Bernard,E. Wesley Ely +10 more
TL;DR: In this study of mechanically ventilated medical intensive care unit patients, duration of delirium was independently associated with long-term cognitive impairment, a common public health problem amongintensive care unit survivors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preoperative portal vein embolization for major liver resection: a meta-analysis.
Adel Abulkhir,Paolo Limongelli,Andrew J. Healey,O. Damrah,Paul Tait,James C. Jackson,Nagy A. Habib,Long R. Jiao +7 more
TL;DR: PVE is a safe and effective procedure in inducing liver hypertrophy to prevent postresection liver failure due to insufficient liver remnant and the rate for minor complications was significantly higher among patients who had PTPE than TIPE group.
