Response to McQueen et al.: Theoretical and Empirical Arguments Support Interactive Processing

TL;DR: It is argued that interactive, rather than feedforward, processing is the algorithm that the brain uses to accomplish optimal information integration and that interactive processing provides a more parsimonious algorithm than the feedforward approach of McQueen.
Journal ArticleDOI

An interactive activation model of speech perception

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a model of speech perception based on the Interactive Activation Model of Visual Word Perception, in which excitatory and inhibitory interactions among nodes for phonetic features, phonemes, and words are used to account for aspects of the interaction of bottom-up and top-down processes in perception of speech.
Journal ArticleDOI

Differentiation and integration in human language. Reply to Marslen-Wilson and Tyler.

TL;DR: It is not believed that connectionist models of the type proposed by M&P represent a promising direction, either for resolving the past-tense dispute, or for capturing the specific functional and neural architecture of the human language system.

When a bad metaphor may not be a victimless crime: The role of metaphor in social policy

TL;DR: Thobodeau et al. as discussed by the authors found that framing the issue of crime metaphorically as a predator yielded systematically different suggestions for solving the crime problem than when crime was described as a virus.
