Assessing Methane Emissions from Global Space-Borne Observations

TL;DR: This work retrieved the global methane distribution by using spaceborne near-infrared absorption spectroscopy and observed unexpectedly high methane concentrations over tropical rainforests, revealing that emission inventories considerably underestimated methane sources in these regions during the time period of investigation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Atmospheric methane and carbon dioxide from SCIAMACHY satellite data: initial comparison with chemistry and transport models

TL;DR: In this article, the results obtained from observations of the up-welling radiation in the near-infrared by SCIAMACHY on board ENVISAT are presented, where vertical columns of CH4, CO2 and oxygen have been retrieved and the (air or) O2-normalised CH4 and CO2 column amounts, the dry air column averaged mixing ratios XCH4 and XCO2 derived.
Journal ArticleDOI

Satellite chartography of atmospheric methane from SCIAMACHY on board ENVISAT: Analysis of the years 2003 and 2004

TL;DR: In this paper, the vertical column density of methane is converted to column averaged mixing ratio by using carbon dioxide retrievals as proxy for the probed atmospheric column, and the global measurements with global coverage over continents are compared with model results from the chemistry-transport model TM4.
