Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of lithium surface coatings on plasma performance in the National Spherical Torus Experiment
H.W. Kugel,M.G. Bell,J. W. Ahn,Jean Paul Allain,R. E. Bell,Jose Boedo,C.E. Bush,David Gates,T.K. Gray,Stanley Kaye,Robert Kaita,B.P. LeBlanc,R. Maingi,Richard Majeski,D.K. Mansfield,Jonathan Menard,D. Mueller,Masayuki Ono,S.F. Paul,R. Raman,A. L. Roquemore,P. W. Ross,S.A. Sabbagh,H. Schneider,C.H. Skinner,Vlad Soukhanovskii,T. Stevenson,J. Timberlake,William R. Wampler,Leonid E. Zakharov +29 more
TL;DR: Ono et al. as discussed by the authors applied lithium coatings to plasma facing components found previously in limited plasmas can occur also in high-power diverted configurations, and the results showed that benefits from the coatings were sometimes, but not always, seen.
Journal ArticleDOI
In-situ TEM observation of the response of ultrafine- and nanocrystalline-grained tungsten to extreme irradiation environments
Osman El-Atwani,Jonathan A. Hinks,Graeme Greaves,S. Gonderman,T. Qiu,Mert Efe,Jean Paul Allain +6 more
TL;DR: A dynamic and complex evolution in the microstructure was observed including the formation of defect clusters, dislocations and bubbles, indicating the important role grain boundaries can play in trapping He and thus in giving rise to the enhanced radiation tolerance of nanocrystalline materials.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ultrafine tungsten as a plasma-facing component in fusion devices: effect of high flux, high fluence low energy helium irradiation
Osman El-Atwani,S. Gonderman,Mert Efe,Mert Efe,Gregory De Temmerman,Thomas Morgan,K. Bystrov,Daniel R. Klenosky,Tian Qiu,Jean Paul Allain +9 more
TL;DR: Westerhout et al. as discussed by the authors showed that ultrafine-grained tungsten materials have a greater fluence threshold to the formation of fuzz by an order or magnitude or more, supporting the conjecture that grain boundaries play a major role in the mechanisms of radiation damage.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of progressively increasing lithium coatings on plasma discharge characteristics, transport, edge profiles and ELM stability in the National Spherical Torus Experiment
R. Maingi,Dennis Boyle,Dennis Boyle,John Canik,S.M. Kaye,C.H. Skinner,Jean Paul Allain,M.G. Bell,R.E. Bell,S.P. Gerhardt,T.K. Gray,Michael Jaworski,Robert Kaita,H.W. Kugel,B.P. LeBlanc,J. Manickam,D.K. Mansfield,Jonathan Menard,T.H. Osborne,R. Raman,A. L. Roquemore,S.A. Sabbagh,P. B. Snyder,Vlad Soukhanovskii +23 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of gradually increasing lithium wall coatings on discharge characteristics, with the reference ELMy discharges obtained in boronized, i.e. non-lithiated conditions, was investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Grain size threshold for enhanced irradiation resistance in nanocrystalline and ultrafine tungsten
TL;DR: In this paper, the existence of a grain size threshold for enhanced irradiation resistance in high-temperature helium-irradiated nanocrystalline and ultrafine tungsten is demonstrated.
