Ted E. Senator,Henry G. Goldberg,Alex Memory,William T. Young,Bradley S. Rees,Robert Pierce,Daniel Huang,Matthew Reardon,David A. Bader,Edmond Chow,Irfan Essa,Joshua Jones,Vinay Bettadapura,Duen Horng Chau,Oded Green,Oguz Kaya,Anita Zakrzewska,Erica Briscoe,Rudolph L. Mappus,Robert McColl,Lora G. Weiss,Thomas G. Dietterich,Alan Fern,Weng-Keen Wong,Shubhomoy Das,Andrew Emmott,Jed Irvine,Jay Yoon Lee,Danai Koutra,Christos Faloutsos,Daniel D. Corkill,Lisa Friedland,Amanda Gentzel,David Jensen +33 more
TL;DR: This paper reports on methods and results of an applied research project by a team consisting of SAIC and four universities to develop, integrate, and evaluate new approaches to detect the weak signals characteristic of insider threats on organizations' information systems.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
The 9th annual MLSP competition: New methods for acoustic classification of multiple simultaneous bird species in a noisy environment
Forrest Briggs,Yonghong Huang,Raviv Raich,Konstantinos Eftaxias,Zhong Lei,William Cukierski,Sarah Frey Hadley,Adam S. Hadley,Matthew G. Betts,Xiaoli Z. Fern,Jed Irvine,Lawrence Neal,Anil Thomas,Gabor Fodor,Grigorios Tsoumakas,Hong-Wei Ng,Thi Ngoc Tho Nguyen,Heikki Huttunen,Pekka Ruusuvuori,Tapio Manninen,Aleksandr Diment,Tuomas Virtanen,Julien Marzat,Joseph Defretin,David R. Callender,Chris Hurlburt,Ken Larrey,Maxim Milakov +27 more
TL;DR: It is an open problem for signal processing and machine learning to reliably identify bird sounds in real-world audio data collected in an acoustic monitoring scenario.
Journal ArticleDOI
A characterization of autumn nocturnal migration detected by weather surveillance radars in the northeastern USA
Andrew Farnsworth,Benjamin M. Van Doren,Wesley M. Hochachka,Daniel Sheldon,Daniel Sheldon,Kevin Winner,Jed Irvine,Jeffrey Geevarghese,Steve Kelling +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors characterize density, direction, and speed of nocturnally migrating birds using data from 13 weather surveillance radars in the autumns of 2010 and 2011 in the northeastern US.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Explaining Reinforcement Learning to Mere Mortals: An Empirical Study
Andrew Anderson,Jonathan Dodge,Amrita Sadarangani,Zoe Juozapaitis,Evan Newman,Jed Irvine,Souti Chattopadhyay,Alan Fern,Margaret Burnett +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a user study was conducted to investigate the impact of explanations on non-experts' understanding of reinforcement learning agents and found that the combination of both saliency and reward bars were needed to achieve a statistically significant improvement in mental model score over the control.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Detecting and correcting user activity switches: algorithms and interfaces
Jianqiang Shen,Jed Irvine,Xinlong Bao,Michael Wayne Goodman,Stephen Kolibaba,Anh Tran,Fredric Carl,Brenton Kirschner,Simone Stumpf,Thomas G. Dietterich +9 more
TL;DR: This paper presents TaskPredictor2, a complete redesign of the activity predictor in TaskTracer and its notification user interface that applies a novel online learning algorithm that is able to incorporate a richer set of features than the authors' previous predictors.
