Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of Weight-Loss Diets with Different Compositions of Fat, Protein, and Carbohydrates
Frank M. Sacks,George A. Bray,Vincent J. Carey,Steven R. Smith,Donna H. Ryan,Stephen D. Anton,Katherine McManus,Catherine M. Champagne,Louise M. Bishop,Nancy Laranjo,Meryl S. LeBoff,Jennifer Rood,Lilian de Jonge,Frank L. Greenway,Catherine M. Loria,Eva Obarzanek,Donald A. Williamson +16 more
TL;DR: Low-calorie diets result in clinically meaningful weight loss regardless of which macronutrients they emphasize, and improved lipid-related risk factors and fasting insulin levels.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of 6-month calorie restriction on biomarkers of longevity, metabolic adaptation, and oxidative stress in overweight individuals: a randomized controlled trial.
Leonie K. Heilbronn,Lilian de Jonge,Madlyn I. Frisard,James P. DeLany,D. Enette Larson-Meyer,Jennifer Rood,Tuong Nguyen,Corby K. Martin,Julia Volaufova,Marlene M. Most,Frank L. Greenway,Steven R. Smith,Walter A. Deutsch,Donald A. Williamson,Eric Ravussin +14 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that 2 biomarkers of longevity (fasting insulin level and body temperature) are decreased by prolonged calorie restriction in humans and support the theory that metabolic rate is reduced beyond the level expected from reduced metabolic body mass.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reduced Adipose Tissue Oxygenation in Human Obesity: Evidence for Rarefaction, Macrophage Chemotaxis, and Inflammation Without an Angiogenic Response
Magdalena Pasarica,Olga Sereda,Leanne M. Redman,Diana C. Albarado,David Hymel,Laura E. Roan,Jennifer Rood,David H. Burk,Steven R. Smith +8 more
TL;DR: Adipose tissue rarefaction might lie upstream of both low AT pO2 and inflammation in obesity, and novel approaches to treat the dysfunctional AT found in obesity are suggested.
Journal ArticleDOI
Accuracy of Armband Monitors for Measuring Daily Energy Expenditure in Healthy Adults
Darcy L. Johannsen,Miguel A. Calabro,Jeanne M. Stewart,Warren D. Franke,Jennifer Rood,Gregory J. Welk +5 more
TL;DR: The SenseWear Pro3 and the SenseW wear Mini armbands show promise for accurately measuring daily energy expenditure under free-living conditions, however, more work is needed to improve the ability of these monitors to accurately measure energy expenditure at higher levels of expenditure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Alternate-Day Fasting on Weight Loss, Weight Maintenance, and Cardioprotection Among Metabolically Healthy Obese Adults: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
John F. Trepanowski,Cynthia M. Kroeger,Adrienne Barnosky,Monica C. Klempel,Surabhi Bhutani,Kristin K. Hoddy,Kelsey Gabel,Sally Freels,Joseph Rigdon,Jennifer Rood,Eric Ravussin,Kristina A. Varady +11 more
TL;DR: Alternate-day fasting did not produce superior adherence, weight loss, weight maintenance, or cardioprotection vs daily calorie restriction in obese adults in a single-center randomized clinical trial of obese adults.
