Epidemiological studies have revealed that a diet rich in plant-derived foods has a protective effect on human health. Identifying bioactive dietary constituents is an active area of scientific investigation that may lead to new drug discovery. Kaempferol (3,5,7-trihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one) is a flavonoid found in many edible plants (e.g. tea, broccoli, cabbage, kale, beans, endive, leek, tomato, strawberries and grapes) and in plants or botanical products commonly used in traditional medicine (e.g. Ginkgo biloba, Tilia spp, Equisetum spp, Moringa oleifera, Sophora japonica and propolis). Some epidemiological studies have found a positive association between the consumption of foods containing kaempferol and a reduced risk of developing several disorders such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Numerous preclinical studies have shown that kaempferol and some glycosides of kaempferol have a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, anti-osteoporotic, estrogenic/antiestrogenic, anxiolytic, analgesic and antiallergic activities. In this article, the distribution of kaempferol in the plant kingdom and its pharmacological properties are reviewed. The pharmacokinetics (e.g. oral bioavailability, metabolism, plasma levels) and safety of kaempferol are also analyzed. This information may help understand the health benefits of kaempferol-containing plants and may contribute to develop this flavonoid as a possible agent for the prevention and treatment of some diseases.

A review on the dietary flavonoid kaempferol.

GIAO NMR shift calculation has been applied to the challenging task of reliably assigning stereochemistry with quantifiable confidence when only one set of experimental data are available. We have compared several approaches for assigning a probability to each candidate structure and have tested the ability of these methods to distinguish up to 64 possible diastereoisomers of 117 different molecules, using NMR shifts obtained in rapid and computationally inexpensive single-point calculations on molecular mechanics geometries without time-consuming ab initio geometry optimization. We show that a probability analysis based on the errors in each 13C or 1H shift is significantly more successful at making correct assignments with high confidence than are probabilities based on the correlation coefficient and mean absolute error parameters. A review on recent developments of indole-containing antiviral agents.

Objective To investigate chemical constituents from an ethanolic extract of the branch of Fraxinus sieboldiana (Oleaceaue) Method The constituents were isolated and purified by a combination of various chromatographic techniques including silica gel, macroporous adsorbent resin, Sephadex LH-20, and preparative HPLC. Structures of the isolates were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR and MS techniques. Result Four phenolic and twelve phenylethanoidal glycosides were obtained and their structures were identified as 2,6-dimethoxy-p-hydroquinone-4-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), 2,6-dimethoxy-p-hydroquinone-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (2), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl beta-D-glucopyranoside (3), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl beta-D-xylopyranosyl (1-->6)-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (4), osmanthuside H (5), 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethyl beta-D-glucopyranoside (6), 2-(3, 4-dihydroxyphenyl) ethyl beta-D-glucopyranoside (7), 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-phenyl beta-D-glucopyranoside (8), 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-methoxyphenyl beta-D-glucopyranoside (9), calceolarioside B (10), calceolarioside A (11), ferruginoside A (12), isolugrandoside (13), acteoside (14), chiritotoside C (15), and plantasisoside (16). Conclusion Compounds 1-4,9,12, 13 and 16 were obtained from the genus Fraxinus for the first time.

Phenolic and phenylethanoidal glycosides from branch of Fraxinus sieboldiana

Objective To search for chemical constituents with structural diversity from Laurencia tristicha to supply for biological assay. Method Compounds were isolated by means of column chromatography over normal phase silica gel and Sephadex LH-20, recrystallization and HPLC. Structures were identified by spectroscopic methods including 1D NMR, IR and MS. Cytotoxicities of the purified compounds were evaluated by MTT method. Result Seven compounds were isolated from L. tristicha. Their structures were elucidated as cholesterol (1), cholesta- 5-en-3beta, 7alpha-diol (2), beta-stigmasterol (3), phytol (4), zeaxanthin (5), 4 -hydroxybenzaldehyde (6), indolyl-3-carbaldehyde (7). In the cytotoxic assay compound 2 was active against human cancer cell lines HCT-8, Bel-7402, BGc-823, A549 and HELA with IC50 values of 1.90, 2.02, 1.99, 6.52 and 1.20 microg x mL(-1), respectively. Compound 4 showed cytotoxicity against HCT-8 and HELA with IC50 value of 3.51 and 2.04 microg x mL(-1), and other compounds were inactive ( IC50 > 10 microg x mL(-1)). Conclusion Compounds 1-7 were isolated from L. tristicha for the first time. In additon, compounds 2 and 4 were cytotoxic against several human cancer cell lines.

Studies on chemical constituents of Laurencia tristicha ( II )

The present invention relates to the use of Wangla extractive, succinate derivative and their medicinal salt in preparing medicine for treating dementia, especially Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia. Animal experiments show that succinate derivative can raise the learning memory of model mouse with dementia caused by scopolamine, raise the learning memory of model mouse with dementia caused by beta-amyloid protein and raise the learning memory of model mouse with dementia caused by permanently ligated both side cervical artery and has the advantages of high activity and low toxicity.

Use of succinate derivative for biologically treating dementia

Objective To study the chemical constituents of Chaetomorpha basiretorsa and screen for bioactive leading compounds. Method Compounds were isolated by normal phase silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography, reverse phase MPLC and reverse phase HPLC. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including MS, IR and 1D, 2D NMR. Cytotoxicity of the compounds was screened by using standard MTT method. The purified compounds' inhibition against proliferation of dog vascular smooth muscle cells was also screened by MTT assay. Result Five compounds were isolated from C. basiretorsa and their structures were identified as euphol (I), loloilide (II), 4-cumylphenol (III), zeaxanthin (IV) and lactucaxanthin (V). Conclusion All these compounds were obtained from this genus for the first time. Compound (III), 4-cumylphenol, was a new nature product. All compounds were inactive (IC50 > 10 microg x mL(-1)) in cytotoxicity screening. In inhibition against proliferation of dog vascular smooth muscle cells test, the cell survival ratio to compound I was (0.32 +/- 0.056)% which indicate its potential anti-atherosclerotic bioactivity.

Eighteen lignans were isolated from an ethanol extract of Machilus robusta by a combination of various chromatographic techniques including column chromatography over silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 and reversed-phase HPLC. Their structures were identified by spectroscopic data analysis as isolariciresinol-9'-O-beta-D-xylopyranoside (1), (+)-5'-methoxy-isolariciresinol-9'-O-beta-D-xylopyranoside(2), lyoniresinol-9'-O-beta-D-xylopyranoside(3), (+)-(8S, 8'S) -4, 4'-dihydroxy-3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethoxylignan-9, 9'-diol 9-O-beta-D-xylopyranoside (ssioriside, 4), lyoniresinol (5), meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid (6), (+)-(8S, 8'R)-3', 4, 4'-trihydroxy-3'-methoxylignan (7), (8S, 8'R)-4'-hydroxy-3, 3', 4-trimethoxylignan (meso-monomethyl dihydroguaiaretic acid, 8), (+)-guaiacin (9), isoguaiacin (10), (-)-(7'R, 8R, 8'R)-4, 4'-dihydroxy-3, 3', 5-trimethoxy-2, 7'-cyclolignan (11), henricine B (12), (-)-(7S, 7'S, 8R, 8'R)-4, 4'-dihydroxy-3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethoxy-7, 7'-epoxylignan-9, 9'-dio] (7S, 7'S, 8R, 8'R-icariol A2, 13), (+)-(7R, 8R, 7'E)-4-hydroxy-3, 5'-dimethoxy-7, 4'-epoxy-8, 3'-neolignan-7'-ene (licarin A, 14), nectandrin B (15), machilin-I (16), (-)-pinoresinol (17), and (-)-syringaresinol (18). All compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time. In the preliminary assay, compound 17 showed inhibitory activity against NO secretion of mouse peritoneal macrophages with an inhibition rate of 72.2% at 10 micromol x L(-1).
