Graphene-Like Two-Dimensional Materials

Since the discovery of mechanically exfoliated graphene in 2004, research on ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials has grown exponentially in the fields of condensed matter physics, material science, chemistry, and nanotechnology. Highlighting their compelling physical, chemical, electronic, and optical properties, as well as their various potential applications, in this Review, we summarize the state-of-art progress on the ultrathin 2D nanomaterials with a particular emphasis on their recent advances. First, we introduce the unique advances on ultrathin 2D nanomaterials, followed by the description of their composition and crystal structures. The assortments of their synthetic methods are then summarized, including insights on their advantages and limitations, alongside some recommendations on suitable characterization techniques. Recent Advances in Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials

Herein we report on the synthesis of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and carbonitrides by immersing select MAX phase powders in hydrofluoric acid, HF. The MAX phases represent a large (>60 members) family of ternary, layered, machinable transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. Herein we present evidence for the exfoliation of the following MAX phases: Ti2AlC, Ta4AlC3, (Ti0.5,Nb0.5)2AlC, (V0.5,Cr0.5)3AlC2, and Ti3AlCN by the simple immersion of their powders, at room temperature, in HF of varying concentrations for times varying between 10 and 72 h followed by sonication. The removal of the “A” group layer from the MAX phases results in 2-D layers that we are labeling MXenes to denote the loss of the A element and emphasize their structural similarities with graphene. The sheet resistances of the MXenes were found to be comparable to multilayer graphene. Contact angle measurements with water on pressed MXene surfaces showed hydrophilic behavior.

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides.

The two-dimensional layer of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has recently attracted much interest due to its direct-gap property and potential applications in optoelectronics and energy harvesting. However, the synthetic approach to obtain high-quality and large-area MoS2 atomic thin layers is still rare. Here we report that the high-temperature annealing of a thermally decomposed ammonium thiomolybdate layer in the presence of sulfur can produce large-area MoS2 thin layers with superior electrical performance on insulating substrates. Spectroscopic and microscopic results reveal that the synthesized MoS2 sheets are highly crystalline. The electron mobility of the bottom-gate transistor devices made of the synthesized MoS2 layer is comparable with those of the micromechanically exfoliated thin sheets from MoS2 crystals. Growth of Large-Area and Highly Crystalline MoS2 Thin Layers on Insulating Substrates

The common featureof these materials is that the bulk material forms are layeredstructures with strong covalent bonding in each layer andweak van der Waals forces between the layers. Controlled Synthesis of Abundantly Branched, Hierarchical Nanotrees by Electron Irradiation of Polymers†

Regioselective chemical reactions and structural transformations of two-dimensional (2D) layered transition-metal chalcogenide (TMC) nanocrystals are described. Upon exposure of 2D TiS2 nanodiscs to a chemical stimulus, such as Cu ion, selective chemical reaction begins to occur at the peripheral edges. This edge reaction is followed by ion diffusion, which is facilitated by interlayer nanochannels and leads to the formation of a heteroepitaxial TiS2–Cu2S intermediate. These processes eventually result in the generation of a single-crystalline, double-convex toroidal Cu2S nanostructure. Such 2D regioselective chemical reactions also take place when other ionic reactants are used. The observations made and chemical principles uncovered in this effort indicate that a general approach exists for building various toroidal nanocrystals of substances such as Ag2S, MnS, and CdS.

Transformative two-dimensional layered nanocrystals.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered nanostructures are emerging fast due to their exceptional materials properties. While the importance of physical approaches (e.g., guest intercalation and exfoliation) of 2D layered nanomaterials has been recognized, an understanding of basic chemical reactions of these materials, especially in nanoscale regime, is obscure. Here, we show how chemical stimuli can influence the fate of reaction pathways of 2D layered nanocrystals. Depending on the chemical characteristics (Lewis acid (1O2) or base (H2O)) of external stimuli, TiS2 nanocrystal is respectively transformed to either a TiO2 nanodisc through a “compositional metathesis” or a TiO2 toroid through multistage “edge-selective structural transformation” processes.
