Wearable electronics is expected to be one of the most active research areas in the next decade; therefore, nanomaterials possessing high carrier mobility, optical transparency, mechanical robustness and flexibility, lightweight, and environmental stability will be in immense demand. Graphene is one of the nanomaterials that fulfill all these requirements, along with other inherently unique properties and convenience to fabricate into different morphological nanostructures, from atomically thin single layers to nanoribbons. Graphene-based materials have also been investigated in sensor technologies, from chemical sensing to detection of cancer biomarkers. The progress of graphene-based flexible gas and chemical sensors in terms of material preparation, sensor fabrication, and their performance are reviewed here. Flexible Graphene-Based Wearable Gas and Chemical Sensors

The high specific surface area and the excellent mechanical, electrical, optical and thermal properties of graphene make it an attractive component for high-performance stimuli-responsive or ‘smart’ materials. Complementary to these inherent properties, functionalization or hybridization can substantially improve the performance of these materials. Typical graphene-based smart materials include mechanically exfoliated perfect graphene, chemical vapour deposited high-quality graphene, chemically modified graphene (for example, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide) and their macroscopic assemblies or composites. These materials are sensitive to a range of stimuli, including gas molecules or biomolecules, pH value, mechanical strain, electrical field, and thermal or optical excitation. In this Review, we outline different graphene-based smart materials and their potential applications in actuators, chemical or strain sensors, self-healing materials, photothermal therapy and controlled drug delivery. We also introduce the working mechanisms of graphene-based smart materials and discuss the challenges facing the realization of their practical applications. Graphene and its macroscopic assemblies and composites are currently enabling a range of high-performance ‘smart’ materials that are responsive to various stimuli. In this Review, different graphene-based smart materials are described, along with their potential applications in actuators, chemical or strain sensors, self-healing materials, photothermal therapy and controlled drug delivery.

Graphene-based smart materials

Graphene provides outstanding properties that can be integrated into various flexible and stretchable electronic devices in a conventional, scalable fashion. The mechanical, electrical, and optical properties of graphene make it an attractive candidate for applications in electronics, energy-harvesting devices, sensors, and other systems. Recent research progress on graphene-based flexible and stretchable electronics is reviewed here. The production and fabrication methods used for target device applications are first briefly discussed. Then, the various types of flexible and stretchable electronic devices that are enabled by graphene are discussed, including logic devices, energy-harvesting devices, sensors, and bioinspired devices. The results represent important steps in the development of graphene-based electronics that could find applications in the area of flexible and stretchable electronics.

Graphene-Based Flexible and Stretchable Electronics

This Review discusses the recent experimental and theoretical findings on polycrystalline graphene and related materials. Graphene, a single atomic layer of graphitic carbon, has attracted intense attention because of its extraordinary properties that make it a suitable material for a wide range of technological applications. Large-area graphene films, which are necessary for industrial applications, are typically polycrystalline — that is, composed of single-crystalline grains of varying orientation joined by grain boundaries. Here, we present a review of the large body of research reported in the past few years on polycrystalline graphene. We discuss its growth and formation, the microscopic structure of grain boundaries and their relations to other types of topological defect such as dislocations. The Review further covers electronic transport, optical and mechanical properties pertaining to the characterizations of grain boundaries, and applications of polycrystalline graphene. We also discuss research, still in its infancy, performed on other two-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides, and offer perspectives for future directions of research.

Structure of graphene and its disorders: a review

In detail, disclosed are a monoclonal antibody to HSPA8 (heat shock 70 kDa protein 8 isoform 1), which binds to human embryonic stem cells but does not bind to mouse embryonic stem cells, a hybridoma producing the monoclonal antibody, an assay kit comprising the monoclonal antibody, and a composition for removing human embryonic stem cells comprising the monoclonal antibody.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the inflammatory milieu and/or hypoxia induces the dedifferentiation of synovial cells into mesenchymal stem-like cells, which may contribute to the tumor-like growth of synovial cells. Expression of mesenchymal stem cell markers (CD24, CD44, CD90, CD106, CD146 and Stro-1) was compared among cultured fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or osteoarthritis (OA), bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM MSCs) and normal dermal fibroblasts. After the cells were stimulated with pro-inflammatory cytokines for 3 days under hypoxia or normoxia, the stem cell markers were analyzed by FACS. CD44 and CD90 were expressed constitutively in all four cell types. Only the BM MSCs strongly expressed CD146. The expression of stem cell markers was similar between FLSs from RA and those from OA patients. In addition, the expression levels in FLSs were similar to those in normal dermal fibroblasts. The stimulation of FLSs and dermal fibroblasts with IL-1β or a mixture of cytokines under hypoxia did not induce a marked change in the expression of stem cell markers. These results indirectly suggest that the pro-inflammatory milieu may be not sufficient to induce the dedifferentiation of FLSs in arthritic joints.
