Local Participation in Natural Resource Monitoring: a Characterization of Approaches
Finn Danielsen,Neil D. Burgess,Neil D. Burgess,Andrew Balmford,Paul F. Donald,Mikkel Funder,Julia P. G. Jones,Philip A. Alviola,Danilo S. Balete,Tom Blomley,Justin S. Brashares,Brian Child,Martin Enghoff,Jon Fjeldså,Sune Holt,Hanne Hübertz,Arne Jensen,Per Moestrup Jensen,John Massao,Marlynn M. Mendoza,Yonika M. Ngaga,Michael K. Poulsen,Ricardo Rueda,Moses K. Sam,Thomas Skielboe,Greg Stuart-Hill,Elmer Topp-Jørgensen,Deki Yonten +27 more
TL;DR: A typology of monitoring categories, defined by their degree of local participation, is suggested, ranging from no local involvement with monitoring undertaken by professional researchers to an entirely local effort with monitoring undertook by local people, to help develop a protocol for monitoring in developing countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
At the heart of REDD+: a role for local people in monitoring forests?
Finn Danielsen,Margaret Skutsch,Margaret Skutsch,Neil D. Burgess,Neil D. Burgess,Per Moestrup Jensen,Herizo Andrianandrasana,Bhaskar Singh Karky,Richard E. Lewis,Jon C. Lovett,John Massao,Yonika M. Ngaga,Pushkin Phartiyal,Michael K. Poulsen,Sher Singh,Silvia Solis,Marten Sørensen,Ashish Tewari,Richard P. Young,Richard P. Young,Eliakimu Zahabu +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that local people can collect forest condition data of comparable quality to trained scientists, at half the cost, and draw on their experience to propose how and where local REDD+ monitoring can be established.
Journal ArticleDOI
Community-based Monitoring of Natural Resource Use and Forest Quality in Montane Forests and Miombo Woodlands of Tanzania
TL;DR: Findings indicate that the key elements of this local resource utilisation monitoring scheme are simplicity, incentive mechanisms, transparency and accountability, and autonomy for local managers, however, the methods may not provide sufficient data on changes in biodiversity values in the high value forests and may need to be augmented by conventional monitoring by scientists funded by national or international institutions.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Multicountry Assessment of Tropical Resource Monitoring by Local Communities
Finn Danielsen,Per Moestrup Jensen,Neil Burgess,Ronald Altamirano,Philip A. Alviola,Herizo Andrianandrasana,Justin S. Brashares,A. Cole Burton,Indiana Coronado,Nancy Corpuz,Martin Enghoff,Jon Fjeldså,Mikkel Funder,Sune Holt,Hanne Hübertz,Arne Jensen,Richard E. Lewis,John Massao,Marlynn M. Mendoza,Yonika M. Ngaga,Christian Bressen Pipper,Michael K. Poulsen,Ricardo Rueda,Moses K. Sam,Thomas Skielboe,Marten Sørensen,Richard P. Young +26 more
TL;DR: A multicountry assessment of tropical resource monitoring by local communities is presented in this paper, with a focus on the monitoring of tropical resources in the field of bio-medical applications.
