Facts and Recommendations about Total Homocysteine Determinations: An Expert Opinion
Helga Refsum,A. David Smith,Per Magne Ueland,Ebba Nexo,Robert Clarke,Joseph McPartlin,Carole Johnston,Frode Engbaek,Jörn Schneede,Catherine McPartlin,John M. Scott +10 more
TL;DR: The purpose of this review is to provide an international expert opinion on the practical aspects of total homocysteine determinations in clinical practice and in the research setting and on the relevance of total Homocystinuria measurements as diagnostic or screening tests in several target populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biological and clinical implications of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism.
TL;DR: The MTHFR C677T polymorphism shows no consistent correlation with cardiovascular risk and longevity but, in combination with positive folate balance, the TT genotype is associated with decreased risk of colorectal neoplasias.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hyperhomocysteinemia and elevated methylmalonic acid indicate a high prevalence of cobalamin deficiency in Asian Indians
Helga Refsum,Chittaranjan S. Yajnik,Milind Gadkari,Jörn Schneede,Stein Emil Vollset,Lars Örning,Anne Berit Guttormsen,Anjali Joglekar,Mehmood G Sayyad,Arve Ulvik,Per Magne Ueland +10 more
TL;DR: Indicators of impaired cobalamin status in Asian Indians were observed in both vegetarians and nonvegetarians, which may have important health implications in other parts of India.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Screening on Colorectal Cancer Incidence and Mortality A Randomized Clinical Trial
Øyvind Holme,Magnus Løberg,Mette Kalager,Michael Bretthauer,Miguel A. Hernán,Miguel A. Hernán,Eline Aas,Tor J. Eide,Eva Skovlund,Jörn Schneede,Kjell Magne Tveit,Geir Hoff +11 more
TL;DR: In Norway, once-only flexible sigmoidoscopy screening or flexible sigmatoscopy and FOBT reduced colorectal cancer incidence and mortality on a population level compared with no screening.
Journal ArticleDOI
Riboflavin as a Determinant of Plasma Total Homocysteine: Effect Modification by the Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase C677T Polymorphism
Steinar Hustad,Per Magne Ueland,Stein Emil Vollset,Ying Zhang,Anne-Lise Bjørke-Monsen,Jörn Schneede +5 more
TL;DR: Plasma riboflavin is an independent determinant of plasma tHcy and studies on deficient populations are needed to evaluate the utility of rib oflavin supplementation in hyperhomocysteinemia.
