Classical biological control for the protection of natural ecosystems

R. G. Van Driesche, +46 more
- 11 Aug 2010 -
TL;DR: Ecosystem service protection was provided in the fewest cases by either insect or plant biological control agents, but was more likely to be provided by projects directed against invasive plants, likely because of the strong effects plants exert on landscapes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Rearing the brown marmorated stink bug halyomorpha halys (heteroptera: pentatomidae)

TL;DR: The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys (Stal) (Heteroptera: Pen tatomidae) is a potential threat to Florida agriculture and is a vector of witch's broom phytoplasma in Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) in Asia.
Journal ArticleDOI

Insect herbivores associated with species of solanum (solanaceae) in northeastern argentina and southeastern paraguay, with reference to biological control of weeds in south africa and the united states of america

TL;DR: Based on the insects’ occurrence, abundance and damage to their target weeds, and their absence on other non-target Solanum species, several natural enemies that warrant further investigation were identified.
Journal ArticleDOI

Gratiana boliviana, a potential biocontrol agent of Solanum viarum: Quarantine host-specificity testing in Florida and field surveys in South America

TL;DR: The unsprayed eggplant fieldsthat were surveyed in its natural range in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay from June 1997 to March 2000 indicated that G. boliviana is not a pest of eggplants in SouthAmerica, therefore, a petition for fieldrelease of G.boliviana for classicalbiological control of S. viarum in the USA was submitted in April 2000.
Journal ArticleDOI

Host specificity of Metriona elatior, a potential biological control agent of tropical soda apple, Solanum viarum, in the USA

TL;DR: The leaf beetle Metriona elatior from Brazil-Argentina was screened in the Florida (USA) state quarantine facility as a potential biological control agent of tropical soda apple, Solanum viarum, a recently arrived weed species and tests indicate it causes significant feeding damage to S. melongena crops in the USA.
