Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of the four human malaria parasite species in field samples by the polymerase chain reaction and detection of a high prevalence of mixed infections.
TL;DR: Genus- and species-specific sequences are present within the small subunit ribosomal RNA genes of the four human malaria parasites that have proven to be more sensitive and accurate than by routine diagnostic microscopy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biased distribution of msp1 and msp2 allelic variants in Plasmodium falciparum populations in Thailand
Georges Snounou,Xinping Zhu,Napaporn Siripoon,William Jarra,Sodsri Thaithong,K. N. Brown,S. Viriyakosol +6 more
TL;DR: Although a high degree of diversity characterized these isolates, the overall population structure of the parasites associated with patent malaria infections was observed to remain relatively stable over time and two interesting exceptions to the random distribution were observed.
Journal Article
Genotyping of Plasmodium falciparum isolates by the polymerase chain reaction and potential uses in epidemiological studies.
S. Viriyakosol,Napaporn Siripoon,C Petcharapirat,P Petcharapirat,William Jarra,Sodsri Thaithong,K. N. Brown,Georges Snounou +7 more
TL;DR: A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay is described which provides a sensitive, reproducible and practical method by which parasite populations within species can be characterized and the applicability of this type of genotyping to epidemiology is discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Protective immunity to malaria: studies with cloned lines of Plasmodium chabaudi and P. berghei in CBA/Ca mice. I. The effectiveness and inter-and intra-species specificity of immunity induced by infection
W. Jarra,K. N. Brown +1 more
TL;DR: These data reflect considerable inter‐ and intra‐species structural and immunogenic differences in certain antigens of parasitized erythrocytes and merozoites, which have been identified in a number of murine malarias and associated with protective immunity and have important implications for protective immunity in man.
Journal ArticleDOI
Immunity to malaria: II. Serological response of monkeys sensitized by drug-suppressed infection or by dead parasitized cells in Freund's complete adjuvant
TL;DR: Sera from monkeys sensitized with drug-suppressed infections contained intrastrain variant-specific agglutinins and opsonins for schizont Infected cells, and partially inhibited parasite multiplication in vitro; no evidence of lysins for 51Cr-labeled schizont-infected cells was obtained.
