TL;DR: In this paper, the role of cytotoxic T cells in the pathogenesis of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was investigated. And the authors showed that in the presence of an effective HBV-specific CD8 response, inhibition of virus replication can be independent of liver damage.

IL-7 Licenses Activation of Human Liver Intrasinusoidal Mucosal-Associated Invariant T Cells

TL;DR: Analysis of MAIT cells resident in the vascular bed of livers showed that they represented the majority of T cells expressing NK markers and the dominant IL-17A+ T cell subset in the human liver sinusoids, and it was shown that IL-7, a cytokine produced by hepatocytes during inflammation, regulated TCR-mediated activation ofMAIT cells, licensing them to dramatically increase Th1 cytokines and IL- 17A production.

TL;DR: Patients with or without HCC have a quantitative and functional hierarchy of tumor-specific T cells, and HLA-A2-restricted T cells from HCC patients exist in an exhausted state that might require additional activation to restore function.
