Journal ArticleDOI
Randomized Noninferiority Trial of Telephone Versus In-Person Genetic Counseling for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer
Marc Schwartz,Heiddis B. Valdimarsdottir,Beth N. Peshkin,Jeanne S. Mandelblatt,Rachel Nusbaum,An Tsun Huang,Yaojen Chang,Kristi D. Graves,Claudine Isaacs,Marie E. Wood,Wendy McKinnon,Judy Garber,Shelley R. McCormick,Anita Y. Kinney,George Luta,Sarah A. Kelleher,Kara Grace Leventhal,Patti Vegella,Angie Tong,Lesley King +19 more
TL;DR: Genetic counseling can be effectively and efficiently delivered via telephone to increase access and decrease costs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Longitudinal changes in patient distress following interactive decision aid use among BRCA1/2 carriers: a randomized trial.
Gillian W. Hooker,Kara Grace Leventhal,Tiffani A. DeMarco,Beth N. Peshkin,Clinton Finch,Erica Wahl,Jessica Rispoli Joines,Karen Brown,Heiddis B. Valdimarsdottir,Marc Schwartz +9 more
TL;DR: A computer-based interactive decision aid was developed and tested against usual care in a randomized controlled trial to provide BRCA1/2 carriers with ongoing decision support for breast cancer risk management and provides new insight into the long-term longitudinal effects of DAs.
Journal ArticleDOI
“Is it Really Worth it to Get Tested?”: Primary Care Patients’ Impressions of Predictive SNP Testing for Colon Cancer
Kara Grace Leventhal,William Tuong,Beth N. Peshkin,Yasmin Salehizadeh,Mary B. Fishman,Susan Eggly,Kevin Fitzgerald,Marc Schwartz,Kristi D. Graves +8 more
TL;DR: Patients may look to genetic counselors, physicians or other healthcare professionals as gatekeepers of predictive genomic risk information, according to a mixed-methods study that explored primary care patients’ ideas about genomic testing for common complex diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Behavioral and psychosocial responses to genomic testing for colorectal cancer risk.
Kristi D. Graves,Kara Grace Leventhal,Rachel Nusbaum,Yasmin Salehizadeh,Gillian W. Hooker,Beth N. Peshkin,Morgan Butrick,William Tuong,Jeena Mathew,David S. Goerlitz,Mary B. Fishman,Peter G. Shields,Marc Schwartz +12 more
TL;DR: In this pilot, genomic risk education, including discussion of other risk factors, appeared to impact patients' health behaviors, regardless of the level of SNP risk, and future work can compare risk education with and without SNP results to evaluate if SNP information adds value to existing approaches.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mammographic Breast Density as a Risk Factor for Breast Cancer: Awareness in a Recently Screened Clinical Sample
Suzanne C. O'Neill,Kara Grace Leventhal,Marie Scarles,Chalanda N. Evans,Erini Makariou,Edward Pien,Shawna C. Willey +6 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that although a growing number of women are aware of breast density as a risk factor, this awareness varies and the need for patient education interventions for women at increased risk for the disease is suggested to ensure all women are equally aware of their risks.
