Journal ArticleDOI
Randomized Noninferiority Trial of Telephone Versus In-Person Genetic Counseling for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer
Marc Schwartz,Heiddis B. Valdimarsdottir,Beth N. Peshkin,Jeanne S. Mandelblatt,Rachel Nusbaum,An Tsun Huang,Yaojen Chang,Kristi D. Graves,Claudine Isaacs,Marie E. Wood,Wendy McKinnon,Judy Garber,Shelley R. McCormick,Anita Y. Kinney,George Luta,Sarah A. Kelleher,Kara Grace Leventhal,Patti Vegella,Angie Tong,Lesley King +19 more
TL;DR: Genetic counseling can be effectively and efficiently delivered via telephone to increase access and decrease costs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genotypic and Phenotypic Features of BAP1 Cancer Syndrome: A Report of 8 New Families and Review of Cases in the Literature.
Alexandra M. Haugh,Ching-Ni Njauw,Jeffrey A. Bubley,Anna Elisa Verzì,Bin Zhang,Emily M. Kudalkar,Timothy VandenBoom,Kara E. Walton,Brian L. Swick,Raj Kumar,Huma Q. Rana,Sarah R. Cochrane,Shelley R. McCormick,Christopher R. Shea,Hensin Tsao,Pedram Gerami +15 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that germline mutations in both coding and noncoding regions throughout the BAP1 gene can impair protein function, leading to an increased risk for several associated malignancies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Disparities in uptake of BRCA1/2 genetic testing in a randomized trial of telephone counseling
Morgan Butrick,Scott P. Kelly,Beth N. Peshkin,George Luta,Rachel Nusbaum,Gillian W. Hooker,Kristi D. Graves,Lisa Feeley,Claudine Isaacs,Heiddis B. Valdimarsdottir,Lina Jandorf,Tiffani A. DeMarco,Marie E. Wood,Wendy McKinnon,Judy Garber,Shelley R. McCormick,Marc Schwartz +16 more
TL;DR: The overall increased access made possible with telephone genetic counseling should be considered in light of the possibility that this may also lead to lower rates of testing among high-risk minority women, and additional care should be taken to address potential barriers when services are delivered by telephone.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patient Perceptions of Telephone vs. In-Person BRCA1/BRCA2 Genetic Counseling.
Beth N. Peshkin,Scott P. Kelly,Rachel Nusbaum,Morgan Similuk,Tiffani A. DeMarco,Gillian W. Hooker,Heiddis B. Valdimarsdottir,Andrea Forman,Jessica Rispoli Joines,Claire Davis,Shelley R. McCormick,Wendy McKinnon,Kristi D. Graves,Claudine Isaacs,Judy Garber,Marie E. Wood,Lina Jandorf,Marc Schwartz +17 more
TL;DR: A randomized trial of TC versus usual care (UC; in-person genetic counseling) compared high risk women’s perceptions of overall satisfaction with genetic counseling; convenience; (3) attentiveness during the session; (4) counselor effectiveness in providing support; and (5) counselor ability to recognize emotional responses during the sessions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intentions for risk-reducing surgery among high-risk women referred for BRCA1/BRCA2 genetic counseling.
Angie Tong,Scott P. Kelly,Rachel Nusbaum,Kristi D. Graves,Beth N. Peshkin,Heiddis B. Valdimarsdottir,Marie E. Wood,Wendy McKinnon,Judy Garber,Shelley R. McCormick,Lina Jandorf,Marc Schwartz +11 more
TL;DR: This study examines correlates of patient intentions to undergo risk‐reducing mastectomy (RRM) and risk-reducing oophorectomy (RRO) and investigates attitudes toward risk‐ reducing surgery in women prior to genetic counseling and testing.
