Journal ArticleDOI
Persistence of cccDNA During the Natural History of Chronic Hepatitis B and Decline During Adefovir Dipivoxil Therapy
Bettina Werle-Lapostolle,Scott Bowden,Stephen Locarnini,Karsten Wursthorn,Karsten Wursthorn,Jörg Petersen,Jörg Petersen,George K. K. Lau,Christian Trepo,Patrick Marcellin,Zachary Goodman,William E. Delaney,Shelly Xiong,Carol L. Brosgart,Shan-Shan Chen,Craig S. Gibbs,Fabien Zoulim +16 more
TL;DR: cccDNA persists throughout the natural history of chronic hepatitis B, even in patients with serologic evidence of viral clearance, and long-term ADV therapy significantly decreased cccDNA levels by a primarily noncytolytic mechanism.
Journal ArticleDOI
Peginterferon alpha-2b plus adefovir induce strong cccDNA decline and HBsAg reduction in patients with chronic hepatitis B
Karsten Wursthorn,Marc Lütgehetmann,Maura Dandri,Tassilo Volz,Peter Buggisch,Bernhard Zöllner,Thomas Longerich,Peter Schirmacher,Frauke Metzler,Myrga Zankel,C. Fischer,Graeme Currie,Carol L. Brosgart,Joerg Petersen +13 more
TL;DR: Combined therapy with peg‐IFN and ADV led to marked decreases in serum HBV‐DNA and intrahepatic cccDNA, which was significantly correlated with reduced HBsAg, suggesting the involvement of cytolytic mechanisms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) levels in the natural history of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infection: a European perspective.
Jerzy Jaroszewicz,Jerzy Jaroszewicz,Beatriz Calle Serrano,Karsten Wursthorn,Katja Deterding,Jerome Schlue,R. Raupach,Robert Flisiak,C.-Thomas Bock,C.-Thomas Bock,Michael P. Manns,Heiner Wedemeyer,Markus Cornberg +12 more
TL;DR: Findings may have important implications for understanding the natural history of HBV-infection and for using quantitative HBsAg as a diagnostic tool, i.e. as a marker for predictingHBV-reactivation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Food intake increases liver stiffness in patients with chronic or resolved hepatitis C virus infection.
Ingmar Mederacke,Karsten Wursthorn,J. Kirschner,Kinan Rifai,Michael P. Manns,Heiner Wedemeyer,Matthias J. Bahr +6 more
TL;DR: Transient elastography is increasingly being used in patients with chronic liver disease and has proven particularly useful to identify patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis, while classification of no or little fibrosis appears to be difficult.
Journal ArticleDOI
Discontinuation of oral antivirals in chronic hepatitis B: A systematic review
George V. Papatheodoridis,Ioannis Vlachogiannakos,Evangelos Cholongitas,Karsten Wursthorn,Christos Thomadakis,Giota Touloumi,Jörg Petersen +6 more
TL;DR: Durable VR seems to be feasible in a substantial proportion of patients who discontinue long‐term NA therapy; on‐therapy VR > 24 months offers higher chances of off‐NA VR in patients with HBeAg‐negative chronic hepatitis B.
