An important part of our information-gathering behavior has always been to find out what other people think. With the growing availability and popularity of opinion-rich resources such as online review sites and personal blogs, new opportunities and challenges arise as people now can, and do, actively use information technologies to seek out and understand the opinions of others. The sudden eruption of activity in the area of opinion mining and sentiment analysis, which deals with the computational treatment of opinion, sentiment, and subjectivity in text, has thus occurred at least in part as a direct response to the surge of interest in new systems that deal directly with opinions as a first-class object.

This survey covers techniques and approaches that promise to directly enable opinion-oriented information-seeking systems. Our focus is on methods that seek to address the new challenges raised by sentiment-aware applications, as compared to those that are already present in more traditional fact-based analysis. We include material on summarization of evaluative text and on broader issues regarding privacy, manipulation, and economic impact that the development of opinion-oriented information-access services gives rise to. To facilitate future work, a discussion of available resources, benchmark datasets, and evaluation campaigns is also provided.

Computer vision : a modern approach = 计算机视觉 : 一种现代的方法

We present a system for interactively browsing and exploring large unstructured collections of photographs of a scene using a novel 3D interface. Our system consists of an image-based modeling front end that automatically computes the viewpoint of each photograph as well as a sparse 3D model of the scene and image to model correspondences. Our photo explorer uses image-based rendering techniques to smoothly transition between photographs, while also enabling full 3D navigation and exploration of the set of images and world geometry, along with auxiliary information such as overhead maps. Our system also makes it easy to construct photo tours of scenic or historic locations, and to annotate image details, which are automatically transferred to other relevant images. We demonstrate our system on several large personal photo collections as well as images gathered from Internet photo sharing sites.

Photo tourism: exploring photo collections in 3D

Although Web search engines have become information gateways to the Internet, for queries containing technical terms, search results often contain pages that are difficult to be understood by non-expert users. Therefore, re-ranking search results in a descending order of their comprehensibility should be effective for non-expert users. In our approach, the comprehensibility of Web pages is estimated considering both the document readability and the difficulty of technical terms in the domain of search queries. To extract technical terms, we exploit the domain knowledge extracted from Wikipedia. Our proposed method can be applied to general Web search engines as Wikipedia includes nearly every field of human knowledge. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach by user experiments.

Concept hierarchies, such as hyponymy and meronymy relations, are very important for various natural language processing systems Many researchers have tackled how to mine very large corpora of documents such as the Web for them not manually but automatically However, their methods are mostly based on lexico-syntactic patterns as not necessary but sufficient conditions of concept hierarchies, so they can achieve high precision but low recall when using stricter patterns or they can achieve high recall but low precision when using looser patterns In this paper, property inheritance from a concept to its hyponyms is assumed to be necessary and sufficient conditions of hyponymy relations to achieve high recall and not low precision, and we propose a method to acquire hyponymy relations from the Web based on property inheritance

Mining the web for hyponymy relations based on property inheritance

It becomes possible to acquire our interesting information from diverse information source and media to improve the quality and detailedness of information. For instance, with the spreading of digital broadcasting and broadband internet connection services, the infrastructure for integration of TV-programs and the Internet is prepared and we can find the additional information of a TV-program from the Web. In this paper, we propose a novel information retrieval mechanism for information augmentation based on the notion of topic structure. One of the notable features of our retrieval mechanism is that it can be used to find complementary information of a given web page or video. That is to say, the retrieved information is not just similar to the given web page or video. It can provide some additional information to detail the given one or describe it from different perspective. In this paper, we also show some evaluation results of the complementary information retrieval mechanism.

Topic-Structure Based Complementary Information Retrieval for Information Augmentation

Recently, along with the rapid growth of the Web, the preservation efforts have also increased. As a consequence, large amounts of past Web data are stored in Web archives. This historical data can be used for better understanding of long-term page topics and characteristics. In this paper, we propose an interactive visualization system called Page History Explorer for exploring page histories. It allows for roughly portraying evolution of pages and summarizing their content over time. We use a temporal term cloud as a structure for visualizing prevailing and active terms appearing on pages in the past.

Visualizing historical content of web pages

We propose a method of automatically constructing Web content from video streams with metadata that we call TV2Web. The Web content includes thumbnails of video units and caption data generated from metadata. Users can watch TV ona normal Web browser. They can also manipulate Web content with zooming metaphors to seamlessly alter the level of detail (LOD) of the content being viewed. They can search for favorite scenes faster than with analog video equipment, and experience a new cross-media environment. We also developed a prototype of the TV2Web system and discuss its implementation.
