An important part of our information-gathering behavior has always been to find out what other people think. With the growing availability and popularity of opinion-rich resources such as online review sites and personal blogs, new opportunities and challenges arise as people now can, and do, actively use information technologies to seek out and understand the opinions of others. The sudden eruption of activity in the area of opinion mining and sentiment analysis, which deals with the computational treatment of opinion, sentiment, and subjectivity in text, has thus occurred at least in part as a direct response to the surge of interest in new systems that deal directly with opinions as a first-class object.

This survey covers techniques and approaches that promise to directly enable opinion-oriented information-seeking systems. Our focus is on methods that seek to address the new challenges raised by sentiment-aware applications, as compared to those that are already present in more traditional fact-based analysis. We include material on summarization of evaluative text and on broader issues regarding privacy, manipulation, and economic impact that the development of opinion-oriented information-access services gives rise to. To facilitate future work, a discussion of available resources, benchmark datasets, and evaluation campaigns is also provided.

We present a system for interactively browsing and exploring large unstructured collections of photographs of a scene using a novel 3D interface. Our system consists of an image-based modeling front end that automatically computes the viewpoint of each photograph as well as a sparse 3D model of the scene and image to model correspondences. Our photo explorer uses image-based rendering techniques to smoothly transition between photographs, while also enabling full 3D navigation and exploration of the set of images and world geometry, along with auxiliary information such as overhead maps. Our system also makes it easy to construct photo tours of scenic or historic locations, and to annotate image details, which are automatically transferred to other relevant images. We demonstrate our system on several large personal photo collections as well as images gathered from Internet photo sharing sites.

Recently, much attention has been focussed on database aspects of office automation and their associated research problems [A,EN,PFK,SIGMOD,SSLKG]. One major component in this area is a facility to manage historical data for many “objects”, namely, an object history (management) system. Examples of such systems are those for personal checking account, salary reviews and schedules. However, there has been little widely accepted mathematical formalism which captures major aspects of the historical data for the objects (here called object histories) and permits the identification and analysis of relevant issues. The purpose of the present paper is to introduce a mathematical model allowing such an investigation1.

Computation-Tuple Sequences and Object Histories: Extended Abstract

This paper presents a method to find a photo set of a given event by avoiding misrecognitions from neighbor events. In contrast with a photo summarization problem that seeks photos with high coverage for a photo collection of an event, our goal is to find photos with high perceptual quality, which is defined as the accuracy and quickness to recognize an certain event. We take an approach to proactively avoid misrecognitions of a photo set to improve its perceptual quality, as a photo set that cannot be misrecognized as neighbor events is expected to be one with high perceptual quality. We discuss the types of misrecognitions, namely, sub-event, super-event and sibling-event misrecognition, and then propose three criteria corresponding to each of them. By maximizing combination of three criteria, we generate a photo set that minimizes misrecognition against neighbor events. We empirically demonstrated that our proposed approach can generate photo sets with high perceptual quality in comparison with a baseline method.

Finding Photo Sets of Events by Minimizing Misrecognition from Neighbor Events

We present the theory and practice of permutation coding as a new tool for very low-bit-rate image compression. Conventional source coding deals with the data information of signals, while the permutation coding achieves compression through efficiently representing the positional information (Le., position permutation) caused by ordering the data information into order statistics. A set of four theorems is presented. The first one reveals the information-theoretic relationship between data and permutation information and the rest solves the ef- ficient coding problem. For this, novel tools from finite group theory are applied to derive a compact form of representation for permutation, called permutation-cyclic-reprsentation (PCR)- vectors, with which various regularities and constraints in the structure of positional information are displayed, whereby the coding is made very easy using a rnnlength and Huffman method. A block DCT-based permutation coding algorithm (the BCPC) is developed attempting to combine DCT's excellent features of energy packing and magnitude ordering that are found to be amenable to the permutation coding. This mutually benefitial characteristic significantly reduces the coding bit-rate. Simulation results are provided for real images, showing an improvement by 3-4 dB in the peak-SNR index as compared to those representing the state-of-the-art.

Block Permutation Coding of Images

Recently, MPV(multiple perspective video) has become popular because of recent advancement in digital video technologies. Actually, video surveillance is currently a big application of MPV. In the case of the usage of a lot of video cameras, human's keyword annotation is a tedious task, and automatic image recognition techniques takes an expensive cost to find what are taken in the MPV. Therefore, we need an effective way of capturing camare metadata and sharing annotation information among MPV data. In this paper, we propose a way of modeling and structuring MPV data based on several semantic relationships for browsing and retrieval.
