An important part of our information-gathering behavior has always been to find out what other people think. With the growing availability and popularity of opinion-rich resources such as online review sites and personal blogs, new opportunities and challenges arise as people now can, and do, actively use information technologies to seek out and understand the opinions of others. The sudden eruption of activity in the area of opinion mining and sentiment analysis, which deals with the computational treatment of opinion, sentiment, and subjectivity in text, has thus occurred at least in part as a direct response to the surge of interest in new systems that deal directly with opinions as a first-class object.

This survey covers techniques and approaches that promise to directly enable opinion-oriented information-seeking systems. Our focus is on methods that seek to address the new challenges raised by sentiment-aware applications, as compared to those that are already present in more traditional fact-based analysis. We include material on summarization of evaluative text and on broader issues regarding privacy, manipulation, and economic impact that the development of opinion-oriented information-access services gives rise to. To facilitate future work, a discussion of available resources, benchmark datasets, and evaluation campaigns is also provided.

Computer vision : a modern approach = 计算机视觉 : 一种现代的方法

We present a system for interactively browsing and exploring large unstructured collections of photographs of a scene using a novel 3D interface. Our system consists of an image-based modeling front end that automatically computes the viewpoint of each photograph as well as a sparse 3D model of the scene and image to model correspondences. Our photo explorer uses image-based rendering techniques to smoothly transition between photographs, while also enabling full 3D navigation and exploration of the set of images and world geometry, along with auxiliary information such as overhead maps. Our system also makes it easy to construct photo tours of scenic or historic locations, and to annotate image details, which are automatically transferred to other relevant images. We demonstrate our system on several large personal photo collections as well as images gathered from Internet photo sharing sites.

Photo tourism: exploring photo collections in 3D

As business documents are shared among users in enterprises, finding the documents that fit the userspsila need from disparate data sources under access control policies of enterprises is a challenging task. In this paper, we present a novel secure-index search technique that provides an effective search of business documents with document-level access control. The effective and secure search is realized by incorporating metadata identifying document types, keyword definitions and access control information directly into a search index. Given a search query of an authorized user, a technique that generates SQL statements on the search index to compute the answer for the search query under userpsilas access privilege is also proposed.

Bring Precision and Access Control to Business Document Search

The web is characterized by low publishing barriers and contains content of varying degrees of quality and credibility. It is often difficult for web searchers to locate high quality content in returned search results. In this paper, we propose evaluating the extent to which search results contain recent information related to user queries. Our approach is based on corroborating search results with query-related information obtained from timestamped and non-timestamped sources. It uses news articles collected from online news archives and also employs a simple search index mining process to find terms representing fresh topics. As another contribution, we show how the proposed approach can be used for estimating the focus time of web pages, that is, the time periods to which the content of pages refers. We demonstrate the proof-of-concept system that evaluates and visualizes in real time the freshness levels and focus time of web search results.

Calculating content recency based on timestamped and non-timestamped sources for supporting page quality estimation

Video Search by Impression Extracted from Social Annotation

Multiple perspective video taken by more than several tens of cameras are observed and stored for applications such as video surveillance and outside broadcasting. It is one of the most important demands to grasp what happens in the area from the multiple perspective video in a short time, but there are some problems to be solved. For example, we cannot look at a lot of video simultaneously and it is difficult to understand the entire state of a phenomenon that occurs in a broad area and is sparsely taken by a plural cameras. In this paper, we propose a new skimming method using tempo-spatial importance measures. At first, the video importance is calculated using the importance of elements captured in the video scene. The elements are objects such as buildings and cars, and events such as a temperature rising over and a batter hitting. They have their own importance based on space, time and semantics. Then some video are selected based on their importance and displayed with a map and three-dimensional graphics of the objects for skimming the multiple perspective video effectively. We discuss the tempo-spatial importance of multiple perspective video, the video importance calculation and the display methods based on the importance. We also describe our prototype and some experimental results.

In the logical design of a relational database, the theory of data dependencies has been playing an important role. Data depenencies are integrity constraints concerned with attribute relationships. The theory of functional dependencies (FDs) were successful to capture the important aspects of relational database design: semantics of data and logical scheme design (normalization). Several problems of FDs have been also pointed out, and many kinds of new dependencies have been introduced as the generalizations of FDs. Each of the researches on the theory of the new dependencies, semantics of data and the logical scheme design has made a great progress with few sufficient interactions. This leads to several problems when the data dependency theory is used in the actual relational database design.
