The composition of the Earth

Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. We present the first finding of continental crust-derived Precambrian zircons in garnet/spinel pyroxenite veins within mantle xenoliths carried by the Neogene Hannuoba basalt in the central zone of the North China Craton (NCC). Petrological and geochemical features indicate that these mantle-derived composite xenoliths were formed by silicic melt^lherzolite interaction. The Precambrian zircon ages can be classified into three age groups of 2·4^2·5 Ga, 1·6^2·2 Ga and 0·6^1·2 Ga, coinciding with major geological events in the NCC. These Precambrian zircons fall in the field of continental granitoid rocks in plots of U/Yb vs Hf and Y. Their igneous-type REE patterns and metamorphic zircon type CL images indicate that they were not crystallized during melt^peridotite interaction and subsequent high-pressure metamorphism.The 2·5 Ga zircons have positive eHf(t) values (2·9^10·6), whereas the younger Precambrian zircons are dominated by negative eHf(t) values, indicating an ancient continental crustal origin.These observations suggest that the Precambrian zircons were xenocrysts that survived melting of recycled continental crustal rocks and were then injected with silicate melt into the host peridotite. In addition to the Precambrian zircons, igneous zircons of 315 3 Ma (2 ), 80^170 Ma and 48^64 Ma were separated from the garnet/spinel pyroxenite veins; these provide evidence for lower continental crust and oceanic crust recycling-induced multi-episodic melt^peridotite interactions in the central zone of the NCC. The combination of the positive eHf(t) values (2·91^24·6) of the 315 Ma zircons with the rare occurrence of 302^324 Ma subduction-related diorite^granite plutons in the northern margin of the NCC implies that the 315 Ma igneous zircons might record melt^peridotite interactions in the lithospheric mantle induced by Palaeo-Asian oceanic crust subduction. Igneous zircons of age 80^170 Ma generally coexist with the Precambrian metamorphic zircons and have lower Ce/Yb and Th/U ratios, higher U/Yb ratios and greater negative Eu anomalies.The eHf(t) values of these zircons vary greatly from ^47·6 to 24·6.The 170^110 Ma zircons are generally characterized by negative eHf(t) values, whereas the 110^100 Ma zircons have positive eHf(t) values.These observations suggest that melt^peridotite interactions at 80^170 Ma were induced by partial melting of recycled continental crust. The 48^64 Ma igneous zircons are characterized by negligible Ce anomalies, unusually high REE, U and Th contents, and positive eHf(t) values.These features imply that the melt^peridotite interactions at 48^64 Ma could be associated with a depleted mantle-derived carbonate melt or fluid.

Continental and Oceanic Crust Recycling-induced Melt^Peridotite Interactions in the Trans-North China Orogen: U^Pb Dating, Hf Isotopes and Trace Elements in Zircons from Mantle Xenoliths

Nanodiamonds have excellent mechanical and optical properties, high surface areas and tunable surface structures. They are also non-toxic, which makes them well suited to biomedical applications. Here we review the synthesis, structure, properties, surface chemistry and phase transformations of individual nanodiamonds and clusters of nanodiamonds. In particular we discuss the rational control of the mechanical, chemical, electronic and optical properties of nanodiamonds through surface doping, interior doping and the introduction of functional groups. These little gems have a wide range of potential applications in tribology, drug delivery, bioimaging and tissue engineering, and also as protein mimics and a filler material for nanocomposites.

The properties and applications of nanodiamonds

Energy shortage, environmental crisis, and developing customer demands have driven people to find facile, low-cost, environmentally friendly, and nontoxic routes to produce novel functional materials that can be commercialized in the near future. Amongst various techniques, the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process of biomass (either of isolated carbohydrates or crude plants) is a promising candidate for the synthesis of novel carbon-based materials with a wide variety of potential applications. In this Review, we will discuss various synthetic routes towards such novel carbon-based materials or composites via the HTC process of biomass. Furthermore, factors that influence the carbonization process will be analyzed and the special chemical/physical properties of the final products will be discussed. Despite the lack of a clear mechanism, these novel carbonaceous materials have already shown promising applications in many fields such as carbon fixation, water purification, fuel cell catalysis, energy storage, CO(2) sequestration, bioimaging, drug delivery, and gas sensors. Some of the most promising examples will also be discussed here, demonstrating that the HTC process can rationally design a rich family of carbonaceous and hybrid functional carbon materials with important applications in a sustainable fashion.

Engineering Carbon Materials from the Hydrothermal Carbonization Process of Biomass

Empirical geothermobarometry for garnet peridotites and implications for the nature of the lithosphere, kimberlites and diamonds

Combining hardness indentation tests and micro-Raman spectroscopy it is shown that metallic Si-II is produced near the interface of a diamond indenter and silicon to a depth of about 0.5 μm, where the highest stresses (hydrostatic and deviatoric) exist. At fast unloading rates Si-II transforms to the amorphous state, whereas a mixture of the r8 high pressure polymorph Si-XII and the bc8 phase Si-III forms upon a slow load release. The region of Si-III+Si-XII is surrounded by the wurtzite structured Si-IV, where the stresses during the indentation had not been high enough to cause the transition to the metallic state. Thus, because of shear deformation a direct transformation to Si-IV takes place. Outside the phase-transformed regions the classical aspects of indentation-induced deformation by dislocation glide, twinning and crack formation are observed. Silicon carbide (SiC) as both the most important non-oxide ceramic and promising semiconductor material grows stoichiometric SiO 2 as its native oxide. During passive oxidation, a surface transformation of SiC into silica takes place causing bulk volume and bulk mass increase. This review summarizes state-of-the-art information about the structural aspects of silicon carbide, silica, and SiC–SiO 2 interfaces and discusses physicochemical properties and kinetics of the processes involved. A special section describes the electronic properties of carbide–oxide interfaces, which are inferior compared to Si–SiO 2 interfaces, limiting the use of SiC-based electronics. In the oxidation of SiC there is a variety of parameters (e.g., porosity, presence of sintering aids, impurities, crystallographic orientation, surface treatment, and atmospheric composition) influencing the process. Silica on Silicon Carbide

This paper supplies new interpretation of nanoindentation data for silicon, germanium, and gallium arsenide based on Raman microanalysis of indentations. For the first time, Raman microspectroscopy analysis of semiconductors within nanoindentations is reported. The given analysis of the load-displacement curves shows that depth-sensing indentation can be used as a tool for identification of pressure-induced phase transformations. Volume change upon reverse phase transformation of metallic phases results either in a pop-out (or a kink-back) or in a slope change (elbow) of the unloading part of the load-displacement curve. Broad and asymmetric hysteresis loops of changing width, as well as changing slope of the elastic part of the loading curve in cyclic indentation can be used for confirmation of a phase transformation during indentation. Metallization pressure can be determined as average contact pressure (Meyer’s hardness) for the yield point on the loading part of the load-displacement curve. The pressure of the reverse transformation of the metallic phase can be measured from pop-out or elbow on the unloading part of the diagram. For materials with phase transformations less pronounced than in Si, replotting of the loaddisplacement curves as average contact pressure versus relative indentation depth is required to determine the transformation pressures and/or improve the accuracy of data interpretation.
