In evolutionary multiobjective optimization, maintaining a good balance between convergence and diversity is particularly crucial to the performance of the evolutionary algorithms (EAs). In addition, it becomes increasingly important to incorporate user preferences because it will be less likely to achieve a representative subset of the Pareto-optimal solutions using a limited population size as the number of objectives increases. This paper proposes a reference vector-guided EA for many-objective optimization. The reference vectors can be used not only to decompose the original multiobjective optimization problem into a number of single-objective subproblems, but also to elucidate user preferences to target a preferred subset of the whole Pareto front (PF). In the proposed algorithm, a scalarization approach, termed angle-penalized distance, is adopted to balance convergence and diversity of the solutions in the high-dimensional objective space. An adaptation strategy is proposed to dynamically adjust the distribution of the reference vectors according to the scales of the objective functions. Our experimental results on a variety of benchmark test problems show that the proposed algorithm is highly competitive in comparison with five state-of-the-art EAs for many-objective optimization. In addition, we show that reference vectors are effective and cost-efficient for preference articulation, which is particularly desirable for many-objective optimization. Furthermore, a reference vector regeneration strategy is proposed for handling irregular PFs. Finally, the proposed algorithm is extended for solving constrained many-objective optimization problems.

Computational Analysis of Various Factors on the Edgetone Mechanism Using High Order Schemes

Flow-fields around the basic SSTO-rocket configurations are numerically simulated by the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations. Simulations of the Apollo-like configuration is first carried out, where the results are compared with NASA experiments and the prediction ability of the RANS simulation is discussed. The angle of attack of the freestream ranges from 0° to 180° and the freestream Mach number ranges from 0.7 to 2.0. Computed aerodynamic coefficients for the Apollo-like configuration agree well with the experiments under a wide range of flow conditions. The flow simulations around the slender Apollo-type configuration are carried out next and the results are compared with the experiments. Computed aerodynamic coefficients also agree well with the experiments. Flow-fields are dominated by the three-dimensional massively separated flow, which should be captured for accurate aerodynamic prediction. Grid refinement effects on the computed aerodynamic coefficients are investigated comprehensively.

Assessment of CFD Estimation of Aerodynamic Characteristics of Basic Reusable Rocket Configurations

Transonic and supersonic flutter characteristics of a delta wing configuration with external stores are simulated using the fluid/structure coupling method and the effect of the store aerodynamics is investigated. A delta wing with one and two external stores are considered in this study. The stores are located in the rearward of the wing simulating typical high speed aircraft configurations. The computational result shows that the flutter dynamic pressures over all the Mach numbers are reduced by adding external stores for both cases. In addition, the flutter dynamic pressures become much lower when the number of attached external stores is increased. In the case of the single external store, influence of the store aerodynamics can be divided into two regions according to the Mach number. It is found that neglecting the store aerodynamics leads to the overestimation of the flutter dynamic pressures in the supersonic region. In case of two external stores, the store aerodynamics influence on the flutter boundary only at M∞ =1 .22 unlike the case of the single external store. It is shown that the shock wave ahead of the external store influences on the pressure distributions on the lower surface and the location of the shock wave is important for the decision of the flutter boundary.
