Ground‐based measurements of spatial and temporal variability of snow accumulation in East Antarctica
Olaf Eisen,Olaf Eisen,Massimo Frezzotti,Christophe Genthon,Elisabeth Isaksson,Olivier Magand,Michiel R. van den Broeke,Daniel A. Dixon,Alexey A. Ekaykin,Per Holmlund,Takao Kameda,L. Karlöf,Susan Kaspari,Vladimir Ya. Lipenkov,Hans Oerter,Shuhei Takahashi,David G. Vaughan +16 more
TL;DR: In this article, an overview of the various measurement techniques, related difficulties, and limitations of data interpretation; describe spatial characteristics of East Antarctic SMB and issues related to the spatial and temporal representativity of measurements; and provide recommendations on how to perform in situ measurements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Snow chemistry across Antarctica
Nancy A. N. Bertler,Paul Andrew Mayewski,A. Aristarain,P. Barrett,Silvia Becagli,Ronaldo T. Bernardo,Sun Bo,C. Xiao,Mark A. J. Curran,D. Qin,Daniel A. Dixon,Francisco A. Ferron,Hubertus Fischer,Markus M. Frey,Massimo Frezzotti,Felix Fundel,Christophe Genthon,R. Gragnani,Gordon S. Hamilton,Michael Handley,Sungmin Hong,Elisabeth Isaksson,J. Kang,J. Williamson,Jan-Gunnar Winther,Yuansheng Li,Eric W. Wolff,Z. Li,A. Zielinski +54 more
TL;DR: An updated compilation of published and new data of major-ion (Ca, Cl, K, Mg, Na, NO3, SO4) and methylsulfonate (MS) concentrations in snow from 520 Antarctic sites is provided by the national ITASE (International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition) programmes of Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, United Kingdom, the United States and the national Antarctic programme of Finland as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate variables along a traverse line in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica
Michiel R. van den Broeke,Jan-Gunnar Winther,Elisabeth Isaksson,J. F. Pinglot,L. Karlöf,Trond Eiken,Louk Conrads +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a simple katabatic-wind model is used to explain the variations of accumulation along the traverse line in terms of divergence/convergence of the local transport of drifting snow.
Journal ArticleDOI
A new ice-core record from Lomonosovfonna, Svalbard: viewing the 1920-97 data in relation to present climate and environmental conditions
Elisabeth Isaksson,Veijo A. Pohjola,Tauno Jauhiainen,John C. Moore,Jean-Francis Pinglot,Rein Vaikmäe,Roderik S. W. van de Wal,Jon Ove Hagen,Jüri Ivask,L. Karlöf,Tõnu Martma,Harro A. J. Meijer,Robert Mulvaney,M. Thomassen,Michiel R. van den Broeke +14 more
TL;DR: In 1997, a 121 m ice core was retrieved from Lomonosovfonna, the highest ice field in Spitsbergen, Svalbard (1250 m a.s.l.). Radar measurements indicate an ice depth of 126.5 m, and borehole temperature measurements show that the ice is below the melting point.
Journal ArticleDOI
Snow and blue-ice distribution patterns on the coastal Antarctic Ice Sheet
TL;DR: In this article, alternating snow and blue-ice bands are found in the Jutulgryta area of Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, using a snow transport and redistribution model driven with a winter cycle of observed daily screen-height air temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction.
