Beneficial Effects of Leukocyte Depletion of Transfused Blood on Postoperative Complications in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery A Randomized Clinical Trial
Leo M.G. van de Watering,Jo Hermans,Jos G.A. Houbiers,Pieter J. van den Broek,Hens Bouter,F. Boer,Mark S. Harvey,Hans A. Huysmans,Anneke Brand +8 more
TL;DR: In cardiac surgery patients, especially when more than three blood transfusions are required, leukocyte depletion by filtration results in a significant reduction of the postoperative mortality that can only partially be explained by the higher incidence of postoperative infections in the PC group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Age of Transfused Blood in Critically Ill Adults
Jacques Lacroix,Paul C. Hébert,Dean Fergusson,Alan Tinmouth,Deborah J. Cook,John C. Marshall,Lucy Clayton,Lauralyn McIntyre,Jeannie Callum,Alexis F. Turgeon,Morris A. Blajchman,Timothy S. Walsh,Simon J. Stanworth,Helen Campbell,Gilles Capellier,Pierre Tiberghien,Laurent Bardiaux,Leo M.G. van de Watering,Nardo J. M. van der Meer,Elham Sabri,Abstr Act +20 more
TL;DR: Transfusion of fresh red cells, as compared with standard-issueRed cells, did not decrease the 90-day mortality among critically ill adults and there were no significant between-group differences in any of the secondary outcomes or in the subgroup analyses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transfusion reactions: prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Meghan Delaney,Silvano Wendel,Rachel S. Bercovitz,Joan Cid,Claudia S. Cohn,Nancy M. Dunbar,Torunn Oveland Apelseth,Mark A. Popovsky,Simon J. Stanworth,Simon J. Stanworth,Alan Tinmouth,Alan Tinmouth,Leo M.G. van de Watering,Jonathan H. Waters,Mark H. Yazer,Alyssa Ziman +15 more
TL;DR: An international panel of experts provides a synopsis of the pathophysiology, treatment, and management of each diagnostic category of transfusion reaction using evidence-based recommendations whenever available.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of storage time of red blood cell transfusions on the prognosis of coronary artery bypass graft patients
TL;DR: The aim in this study was to investigate the possible role of the storage time of RBC transfusions on the outcome of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Red blood cell alloantibodies after transfusion: factors influencing incidence and specificity
TL;DR: Alloimmunization after exposure to red cell (RBC) alloantigens depends on genetic and acquired patient‐related factors, dose and route of administration, and the immunogenicity of the antigen, but exact kinetics are still unknown.
