Lasing without inversion: a dream come true
Dmitri E. Nikonov,Marlan O. Scully,M. D. Lukin,Edward S. Fry,Leo W. Hollberg,G. G. Padmbandu,George R. Welch,Alexander S. Zibrov +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, two experiments in which laser oscillation without population inversion was obtained for the first time are reported, and analytical solutions are presented to elucidate the principles of the experiments.

Cooling and Trapping of Atoms with Laser Light
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review the work done at Bell Laboratories to confine and cool sodium atoms to T = 2.4 × 10−4K in a viscous molasses of photons tuned to the yellow “D-line” resonance of sodium.
