Journal ArticleDOI
Nebivolol inhibits vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation by mechanisms involving nitric oxide but not cyclic GMP.
Louis J. Ignarro,Manisha Sisodia,Kim Trinh,Sahar Bedrood,Guoyao Wu,Liu Hua Wei,Georgette M. Buga +6 more
TL;DR: Observations confirm previous findings that DFMO and NO interfere with RASMC proliferation by inhibiting ODC and polyamine production and provide evidence that nebivolol works by the same mechanism.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nitric oxide is not just blowing in the wind.
TL;DR: This article is part of a themed section on Nitric Oxide 20 Years from the 1998 Nobel Prize, which highlights the need to understand more fully the role of phosphorous in the response to climate change.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sensing endoplasmic reticulum stress by protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase promotes adaptive mitochondrial DNA biogenesis and cell survival via heme oxygenase-1/carbon monoxide activity
Min Zheng,Seul-Ki Kim,Yeonsoo Joe,Sung Hoon Back,Hong R. Cho,Hong Pyo Kim,Louis J. Ignarro,Hun-Taeg Chung +7 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided that heme oxygenase‐1 (HO‐1) activity protects cells against ER stress in a protein kinase RNA‐like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK)‐dependent pathway and that PERK‐mediated induction of HO‐1 in murine macrophages, RAW264.7, relays ER stress to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication and function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Functional impairment of hematopoietic progenitor cells in patients with coronary heart disease.
A. Liguori,Carmela Fiorito,Maria Luisa Balestrieri,Ettore Crimi,Giuseppe Bruzzese,Sharon Williams-Ignarro,Maurizio D’Amora,Linda Sommese,Vincenzo Grimaldi,Pellegrino Biagio Minucci,Alfonso Giovane,Bartolomeo Farzati,Louis J. Ignarro,Claudio Napoli +13 more
TL;DR: In this small clinical study, CHD is associated with selective impairment of HSC function in the BM and in the peripheral blood, which may contribute to impairment of cardiac function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bone marrow cell-mediated cardiovascular repair: potential of combined therapies.
TL;DR: The clinical potential of BMC transplantation alone and in combined therapy that aims to restore organ vascularization and function are discussed and the mechanisms of mobilization, differentiation and incorporation of BMCs are considered.
