This article describes the process of formation of droplets and bubbles in microfluidic T-junction geometries. At low capillary numbers break-up is not dominated by shear stresses: experimental results support the assertion that the dominant contribution to the dynamics of break-up arises from the pressure drop across the emerging droplet or bubble. This pressure drop results from the high resistance to flow of the continuous (carrier) fluid in the thin films that separate the droplet from the walls of the microchannel when the droplet fills almost the entire cross-section of the channel. A simple scaling relation, based on this assertion, predicts the size of droplets and bubbles produced in the T-junctions over a range of rates of flow of the two immiscible phases, the viscosity of the continuous phase, the interfacial tension, and the geometrical dimensions of the device.

Emerging Droplet Microfluidics

Droplet based microfluidics is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field of research combining soft matter physics, biochemistry and microsystems engineering. Its applications range from fast analytical systems or the synthesis of advanced materials to protein crystallization and biological assays for living cells. Precise control of droplet volumes and reliable manipulation of individual droplets such as coalescence, mixing of their contents, and sorting in combination with fast analysis tools allow us to perform chemical reactions inside the droplets under defined conditions. In this paper, we will review available drop generation and manipulation techniques. The main focus of this review is not to be comprehensive and explain all techniques in great detail but to identify and shed light on similarities and underlying physical principles. Since geometry and wetting properties of the microfluidic channels are crucial factors for droplet generation, we also briefly describe typical device fabrication methods in droplet based microfluidics. Examples of applications and reaction schemes which rely on the discussed manipulation techniques are also presented, such as the fabrication of special materials and biophysical experiments.

Droplet based microfluidics

This critical review discusses the current understanding of the formation, transport, and merging of drops in microfluidics. We focus on the physical ingredients which determine the flow of drops in microchannels and recall classical results of fluid dynamics which help explain the observed behaviour. We begin by introducing the main physical ingredients that differentiate droplet microfluidics from single-phase microfluidics, namely the modifications to the flow and pressure fields that are introduced by the presence of interfacial tension. Then three practical aspects are studied in detail: (i) The formation of drops and the dominant interactions depending on the geometry in which they are formed. (ii) The transport of drops, namely the evaluation of drop velocity, the pressure-velocity relationships, and the flow field induced by the presence of the drop. (iii) The fusion of two drops, including different methods of bridging the liquid film between them which enables their merging.

Dynamics of microfluidic droplets.

Precise and effective control of droplet generation is critical for applications of droplet microfluidics ranging from materials synthesis to lab-on-a-chip systems. Methods for droplet generation can be either passive or active, where the former generates droplets without external actuation, and the latter makes use of additional energy input in promoting interfacial instabilities for droplet generation. A unified physical understanding of both passive and active droplet generation is beneficial for effectively developing new techniques meeting various demands arising from applications. Our review of passive approaches focuses on the characteristics and mechanisms of breakup modes of droplet generation occurring in microfluidic cross-flow, co-flow, flow-focusing, and step emulsification configurations. The review of active approaches covers the state-of-the-art techniques employing either external forces from electrical, magnetic and centrifugal fields or methods of modifying intrinsic properties of flows or fluids such as velocity, viscosity, interfacial tension, channel wettability, and fluid density, with a focus on their implementations and actuation mechanisms. Also included in this review is the contrast among different approaches of either passive or active nature.

Passive and active droplet generation with microfluidics: a review

We describe the results of a numerical investigation of the dynamics of breakup of streams of immiscible fluids in the confined geometry of a microfluidic T-junction. We identify three distinct regimes of formation of droplets: squeezing, dripping and jetting, providing a unifying picture of emulsification processes typical for microfluidic systems. The squeezing mechanism of breakup is particular to microfluidic systems, since the physical confinement of the fluids has pronounced effects on the interfacial dynamics. In this regime, the breakup process is driven chiefly by the buildup of pressure upstream of an emerging droplet and both the dynamics of breakup and the scaling of the sizes of droplets are influenced only very weakly by the value of the capillary number. The dripping regime, while apparently homologous to the unbounded case, is also significantly influenced by the constrained geometry; these effects modify the scaling law for the size of the droplets derived from the balance of interfacial and viscous stresses. Finally, the jetting regime sets in only at very high flow rates, or with low interfacial tension, i.e. higher values of the capillary number, similar to the unbounded case.

Transition from squeezing to dripping in a microfluidic T-shaped junction

We present a detailed theoretical study of scanning tunneling imaging and spectroscopy of \Csixty on silver and gold surfaces, motivated by the recent experiments and discussion by X. Lu et al. [PRL \textbf{90}, 096802 (2003) and PRB \textbf{70}, 115418 (2004)]. The surface/sample/tip system is described within a self--consistent DFT based tight--binding model. The topographic and conductance images are computed at constant current from a full self--consistent transport theory based on nonequilibrium Green's functions and compared with those simulated from the local density of states. The molecular orbitals of \Csixty are clearly identified in the energy resolved maps, in close correspondence with the experimental results. We show how the tip structure and orientation can affect the images. In particular, we consider the effects of truncated tips on the energy resolved maps.

Energy resolved STM mapping of C60 on metal surfaces : a theoretical study

By means of STM measurements and fully self-consistent transport calculations we analyze how STM trajectories for the mapping of nanostructures on surfaces are affected by the atomic structure of the tip. For the particular case of carbon nanotubes we show that considerable distortions of the STM trajectory with respect to the actual structure, position and diameter of the nanotube can occur for certain tip geometries. Comparison between theory and experiment can allow to characterize and correct these distortions.

Tip-induced distortions in STM imaging of carbon nanotubes

The transport properties of Agn clusters, 40<n< 100, deposited on crystalline graphite and probed with a tunneling tip are analyzed by using non-equilibrium Green’s functions. Current–voltage characteristics are computed accounting for self-consistent charge redistribution in the cluster caused by coupling to the surface and the external bias. The differential conductance is compared to the density of states of the supported clusters at equilibrium, highlighting the effects of charging and substrate properties on the measured spectrum.
