The Self-Organizing Map

With construction of new large-scale water storage projects on the wane in the U.S. and other developed countries, attention must focus on improving the operational effectiveness and efficiency of existing reservoir systems for maximizing the beneficial uses of these projects. Optimal coordination of the many facets of reservoir systems requires the assistance of computer modeling tools to provide information for rational management and operational decisions. The purpose of this review is to assess the state-of-the-art in optimization of reservoir system management and operations and consider future directions for additional research and application. Optimization methods designed to prevail over the high-dimensional, dynamic, nonlinear, and stochastic characteristics of reservoir systems are scrutinized, as well as extensions into multiobjective optimization. Application of heuristic programming methods using evolutionary and genetic algorithms are described, along with application of neural networks and fuzzy rule-based systems for inferring reservoir system operating rules.

Artificial Neural Networks in Hydrology. II: Hydrologic Applications

In this paper, we briefly review some of the most common approaches in path planning and we present a unified approach in path generation for a mobile robot. We use a memory neuron network to control a mobile robot along a trajectory while avoiding obstacles. We briefly show the robot's features in order to introduce the neural network used to control it. Some simulation results are discussed.

A neural-network-based path generation technique for mobile robots

Anew control strategy to achieve high performance from solar photovoltaic system using single stage inverter interfacing grid without maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques is investigated in this paper. Sinusoid-tracking algorithm and adaptive filter is proposed to improve the power quality and to regulate constant AC voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). Proportional integral controllers for the both outer loops are reinforced by antiwindup strategy to prevent saturation issue when system is subjected to sudden variation. The effectiveness of the developed control algorithm and the proposed configuration are tested using Matlab/Simulink.

This paper presents an adaptive control scheme for a mobile manipulator robot based on the virtual decomposition control (VDC). The control strategy was tested on three degrees of freedom manipulator arm mounted on two degrees of freedom mobile platform to track a desired trajectory. The desired trajectory is obtained from the workspace trajectory using the inverse kinematics. Differently to the known decentralized control that divides the mobile manipulator into two subsystems, in this paper, the mobile manipulator has N degrees of freedom, divided virtually into N subsystems. The applicability of the proposed scheme is demonstrated in real time validation. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the VDC approach.
