Journal ArticleDOI
Use of procalcitonin to reduce patients' exposure to antibiotics in intensive care units (PRORATA trial): a multicentre randomised controlled trial.
Lila Bouadma,Charles-Edouard Luyt,Florence Tubach,Christophe Cracco,Antonio Alvarez,Carole Schwebel,Frédérique Schortgen,Sigismond Lasocki,Benoit Veber,Monique Dehoux,Maguy Bernard,Blandine Pasquet,Bernard Regnier,Christian Brun-Buisson,Jean Chastre,Michel Wolff +15 more
TL;DR: A procalcitonin-guided strategy to treat suspected bacterial infections in non-surgical patients in intensive care units could reduce antibiotic exposure and selective pressure with no apparent adverse outcomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Procalcitonin kinetics as a prognostic marker of ventilator-associated pneumonia.
Charles-Edouard Luyt,Valérie Guerin,Alain Combes,Jean-Louis Trouillet,Said Ben Ayed,Maguy Bernard,Claude Gibert,Jean Chastre +7 more
TL;DR: Serum procalcitonin levels decreased during the clinical course of VAP but were significantly higher from Day 1 to Day 7 in patients with unfavorable outcomes, suggesting procalCitonin could be a prognostic marker of outcome during VAP.
Journal ArticleDOI
Usefulness of procalcitonin as a marker of systemic infection in emergency department patients: a prospective study.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated serum procalcitonin concentrations in patients who presented to an emergency department (ED) with suspected infectious or inflammatory disease, and found that the procitonins were significantly higher in those who ultimately died of systemic infection than those who survived.
Journal ArticleDOI
Usefulness of procalcitonin for the diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia
Charles-Edouard Luyt,Alain Combes,Catherine Reynaud,Guillaume Hékimian,Ania Nieszkowska,Marc Tonnellier,Alexandra Aubry,Jean-Louis Trouillet,Maguy Bernard,Jean Chastre +9 more
TL;DR: Crude values and procalcitonin rise had poor diagnostic value for VAP in this particular setting and thus should not be used to initiate antibiotics when VAP is clinically suspected.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of renal dysfunction on the accuracy of procalcitonin for the diagnosis of postoperative infection after vascular surgery.
Julien Amour,A. Birenbaum,Olivier Langeron,Yannick Le Manach,Michèle Bertrand,Pierre Coriat,Bruno Riou,Maguy Bernard,Pierre Hausfater +8 more
TL;DR: Procalcitonin is a valuable marker of bacterial infections after major aortic surgery, but renal function is a major determinant of procalcotonin levels and thus different thresholds should be applied according to renal function impairment.
