Measuring salivary flow: Challenges and opportunities
TL;DR: Saliva collection methods can be used by dentists to assess patients at risk of developing diseases and by scientists for scholarly activities, and the prevalence of salivary gland hypofunction in the elderly population will increase owing to their longevity.

TL;DR: A catalogue of the salivary proteome of healthy individuals allows future analyses ofSaliva samples from individuals with oral and systemic diseases, with the goal of identifying biomarkers with diagnostic and/or prognostic value for these conditions; another possibility is the discovery of therapeutic targets.

TL;DR: Pilocarpine and cevimeline are recommended for treating hyposalivation and xerostomia in primary and secondary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and a better understanding of the etiopathogenesis of SS may open new treatment options in the future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of Whole Saliva Flow Rates and Mucin Concentrations in Healthy Caucasian Young and Aged Adults
TL;DR: Both groups showed significantly increased flow during salivary stimulation, and MG1 and MG2 concentrations in unstimulated and stimulated saliva samples were significantly lower in the aged group than in the young group.
