Journal ArticleDOI
Release of metabolic enzymes by Giardia in response to interaction with intestinal epithelial cells.
Emma Ringqvist,J. E. Daniel Palm,J. E. Daniel Palm,Hanna Skarin,Adrian B. Hehl,Malin E.-L. Weiland,Barbara J. Davids,David S. Reiner,David S. Reiner,William J. Griffiths,Lars Eckmann,Frances D. Gillin,Staffan G. Svärd,Staffan G. Svärd +13 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that contact of Giardia with epithelial cells triggers metabolic enzyme release, which might facilitate effective colonization of the human small intestine.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of immunoreactive proteins during acute human giardiasis.
J. E. Daniel Palm,Malin E.-L. Weiland,William J. Griffiths,Inger Ljungström,Staffan G. Svärd +4 more
TL;DR: Sixteen immunoreactive proteins were identified using mass spectrometry analysis, among them variable surface proteins, alpha-giardins, arginine deiminase, ornithine carbamoyl transferase, and fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase which may be important in the development of new diagnostic tools and vaccines.
Journal ArticleDOI
Developmental changes in the adhesive disk during Giardia differentiation.
Daniel Palm,Malin E.-L. Weiland,Andrew G. McArthur,Jadwiga Winiecka-Krusnell,Michael J. Cipriano,Shanda R. Birkeland,Sarah E. Pacocha,Barbara J. Davids,Frances D. Gillin,Ewert Linder,Staffan G. Svärd,Staffan G. Svärd +11 more
TL;DR: The composition and structure of the disk throughout the life cycle of Giardia lamblia is determined and a new disk protein, SALP-1, is identified, an immunodominant protein related to striated fiber-assemblin (SFA) that is stored within the cyst.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterisation of alpha-1 giardin: an immunodominant Giardia lamblia annexin with glycosaminoglycan-binding activity
Malin E.-L. Weiland,J. E. Daniel Palm,William J. Griffiths,J. Michael McCaffery,Staffan G. Svärd +4 more
TL;DR: It is shown that a monoclonal antibody that inhibits taglin recognises alpha-1 and alpha-2 giardin, which may play a key role in the parasite-host interaction and a conserved function of annexins from lower to higher eukaryotes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Annexin-like alpha giardins: a new cytoskeletal gene family in Giardia lamblia.
Malin E.-L. Weiland,Andrew G. McArthur,Hilary G. Morrison,Mitchell L. Sogin,Staffan G. Svärd,Staffan G. Svärd +5 more
TL;DR: A genome survey and phylogenetic analysis has identified and sequenced 14 new coding regions for alpha-giardins in Giardia lamblia and demonstrated that several of the genes localised to the same chromosomal fragment.
