Journal ArticleDOI
Bariatric-metabolic surgery versus conventional medical treatment in obese patients with type 2 diabetes: 5 year follow-up of an open-label, single-centre, randomised controlled trial
Geltrude Mingrone,Geltrude Mingrone,Simona Panunzi,Andrea De Gaetano,Caterina Guidone,Amerigo Iaconelli,Giuseppe Nanni,Marco Castagneto,Stefan R. Bornstein,Francesco Rubino +9 more
TL;DR: Surgery is more effective than medical treatment for the long-term control of obese patients with type 2 diabetes and should be considered in the treatment algorithm of this disease, however, continued monitoring of glycaemic control is warranted because of potential relapse of hyperglycaemia.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Mechanism of Diabetes Control After Gastrointestinal Bypass Surgery Reveals a Role of the Proximal Small Intestine in the Pathophysiology of Type 2 Diabetes
Francesco Rubino,Antonello Forgione,David E. Cummings,Michel Vix,Donatella Gnuli,Geltrude Mingrone,Marco Castagneto,Jacques Marescaux +7 more
TL;DR: This study shows that bypassing a short segment of proximal intestine directly ameliorates type 2 diabetes, independently of effects on food intake, body weight, malabsorption, or nutrient delivery to the hindgut.
Journal ArticleDOI
Expression of Mfn2, the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy Type 2A Gene, in Human Skeletal Muscle Effects of Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity, Weight Loss, and the Regulatory Role of Tumor Necrosis Factor α and Interleukin-6
Daniel Bach,Deborah Naon,Sara Pich,Francesc X. Soriano,Nathalie Vega,Jennifer Rieusset,Martine Laville,Christelle Guillet,Yves Boirie,Harriet Wallberg-Henriksson,Melania Manco,Menotti Calvani,Marco Castagneto,Manuel Palacín,Geltrude Mingrone,Juleen R. Zierath,Hubert Vidal,Antonio Zorzano +17 more
TL;DR: In vivo modulation of Mfn2 mRNA levels is an additional level of regulation for the control of muscle metabolism and could provide a molecular mechanism for alterations in mitochondrial function in obesity or type 2 diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanisms of Recovery From Type 2 Diabetes After Malabsorptive Bariatric Surgery
Caterina Guidone,Melania Manco,Elena Valera-Mora,Amerigo Iaconelli,Donatella Gniuli,Andrea Mari,Giuseppe Nanni,Marco Castagneto,Menotti Calvani,Geltrude Mingrone +9 more
TL;DR: BPD determines a prompt reversibility of type 2 diabetes by normalizing peripheral insulin sensitivity and enhancing β-cell sensitivity to glucose, these changes occurring very early after the operation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sirolimus-based therapy following early cyclosporine withdrawal provides significantly improved renal histology and function at 3 years.
Alfredo Mota,Manuel Arias,Eero Taskinen,Timo Paavonen,Timo Paavonen,Yves Brault,Christophe Legendre,Kerstin Claesson,Marco Castagneto,Josep M. Campistol,Brian Hutchison,James T. Burke,Sedar Yilmaz,Pekka Häyry,John F. Neylan,Rapamune Maintenance Regimen Trial +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors reported that early cyclosporine withdrawal from a sirolimus (SRL)-CsA-steroid (ST) regimen improved renal function and blood pressure.
