Journal ArticleDOI
Proteasome inhibition prevents cell death induced by the chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin downstream of DNA damage.
Ana Rita Costa,Nuno Machado,António Rego,Maria João Sousa,Manuela Côrte-Real,Susana R. Chaves +5 more
TL;DR: Results suggest the proteasome is involved in modulation of cisplatin toxicity downstream of DNA damage, which will aid in the development of new strategies to increase the efficacy of chemotherapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cell wall surface properties and flocculence of a Kluyveromyces marxianus strain
TL;DR: Results obtained clearly demonstrate that cell wall hydrophobicity is a major determinant in the flocculation ability of the K ho:ver om yces marxianus cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Expression of Estrogen Receptors Alpha (ER-α), Beta (ER-β), and G Protein-Coupled Receptor 30 (GPR30) in Testicular Tissue of Men with Klinefelter Syndrome.
Raquel L. Bernardino,Marco G. Alves,J. Silva,Alberto Barros,L. Ferraz,Maria João Sousa,Rosália Sá,Pedro Oliveira +7 more
TL;DR: Evaluated GPR30, ERα, and ERβ mRNA expression in testis of KS men and men with 46XY karyotype by reverse transcriptase and quantitative PCR shows ERβ transcripts are the most abundant in testicular tissue of 46XY men, and illustrates that G PR30 may underpin the testicular alterations observed in KS men.
Journal ArticleDOI
C2-Phytoceramide Perturbs Lipid Rafts and Cell Integrity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a Sterol-Dependent Manner
Andreia Pacheco,F. Azevedo,António Rego,Júlia Santos,Susana R. Chaves,Manuela Côrte-Real,Maria João Sousa +6 more
TL;DR: A new function of C2-phytoceramide is identified through disorganization of lipid rafts and induction of a necrotic cell death under hypo-osmotic conditions, further support pursuing the exploitation of yeast to understand the basis of synthetic ceramides’ cytotoxicity to provide novel strategies for therapeutic intervention in cancer and other diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of novel pentose transporters in Kluyveromyces marxianus using a new screening platform.
TL;DR: In this article, a screening platform was developed in the native pentose-utilising yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus to aid in the identification of novel transporters.
