Journal ArticleDOI

Somatic embryogenesis in forestry with a focus on Europe: state-of-the-art, benefits, challenges and future direction

TL;DR: This review will describe benefits, type of vegetative propagation, and its integration into breeding programmes, and a strategy to promote the use of somatic embryogenesis is proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI

De novo assembly of maritime pine transcriptome: implications for forest breeding and biotechnology.

TL;DR: Detailed characterization of the maritime pine transcriptome was performed using a combination of two different next-generation sequencing platforms, 454 and Illumina, allowing the identification of polymorphisms and the establishment of robust single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and simple-sequence repeat (SSR) databases for genotyping applications and integration of translational genomics in maritime pine breeding programmes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Simplified and improved somatic embryogenesis for clonal propagation of Pinus pinaster (Ait.).

TL;DR: Improvements and simplifications of SE protocols in Pinus pinaster (Ait), a species of economic importance in the regions of Western Europe, are described including high initiation frequencies in eight control pollinated seed families, relatively high somatic embryo maturation yield when cells were coated with particles of activated charcoal and a rapid production of plants directly in a shade house.

Recent Progress in Somatic Embryogenesis of Four Pinus spp.

TL;DR: This review emphasizes the most recent progress made in SE and cryopreservation in the genus Pinus, focusing on major plantation and forest species in Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and South America, as well as North America.
Book ChapterDOI

Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)

TL;DR: In this chapter the situation of breeding of Scots pine is described for different European countries and its genetic diversity, the wood production and the state of forest reproductive material of this species in Europe are described.
