Dopamine-dependent changes in the functional connectivity between basal ganglia and cerebral cortex in humans
D Williams,Marina A. J. Tijssen,G van Bruggen,A Bosch,Angelo Insola,V. Di Lazzaro,Paolo Mazzone,A. Oliviero,Angelo Quartarone,Hans Speelman,Peter Brown +10 more
TL;DR: The basal ganglia may receive multiple cortical inputs at frequencies <30 Hz and, in the presence of dopaminergic activity, produce a high frequency drive back to the cerebral cortex, in particular the supplementary motor area (SMA).
Journal ArticleDOI
Mutations in the Na+/K+-ATPase α3 Gene ATP1A3 Are Associated with Rapid-Onset Dystonia Parkinsonism
Patricia de Carvalho Aguiar,Patricia de Carvalho Aguiar,Kathleen J. Sweadner,John T. Penniston,Jacek Zaremba,L. Liu,Marsha Caton,Gurutz Linazasoro,Michel Borg,Marina A. J. Tijssen,Susan B. Bressman,William B. Dobyns,Allison Brashear,Laurie J. Ozelius +13 more
TL;DR: Functional studies and structural analysis of the protein suggest that six missense mutations in the gene for the Na+/K+ -ATPase alpha3 subunit (ATP1A3) impair enzyme activity or stability in RDP, and implicates the Na-K+ pump, a crucial protein responsible for the electrochemical gradient across the cell membrane, in dystonia and parkinsonism.
Journal ArticleDOI
The phenotypic spectrum of rapid-onset dystonia–parkinsonism (RDP) and mutations in the ATP1A3 gene
Allison Brashear,William B. Dobyns,Patricia de Carvalho Aguiar,Michel Borg,C. J. M. Frijns,Seema Gollamudi,Andrew Green,João Guimarães,Bret C. Haake,Christine Klein,Gurutz Linazasoro,Alexander Münchau,Deborah Raymond,David E. Riley,Rachel Saunders-Pullman,Marina A. J. Tijssen,David Webb,Jacek Zaremba,Susan B. Bressman,Laurie J. Ozelius +19 more
TL;DR: In comparing ATP1A3 mutation positive and negative patients, it is found that tremor at onset of symptoms, a reversed rostrocaudal gradient, and significant limb pain exclude a diagnosis of RDP.
Journal ArticleDOI
Double-blind clinical trial of thalamic stimulation in patients with Tourette syndrome.
Linda Ackermans,Annelien Duits,Chris van der Linden,Marina A. J. Tijssen,Koen Schruers,Yasin Temel,Mariska Kleijer,Pieter Nederveen,Richard Bruggeman,Selma C. Tromp,Vivianne van Kranen-Mastenbroek,Herman Kingma,Danielle C. Cath,Veerle Visser-Vandewalle +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, a double-blind randomized cross-over trial assessing the efficacy and safety of stimulation of the centromedian nucleus-substantia periventricularis-nucleus ventro-oralis internus crosspoint in the thalamus was conducted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Different Functional Loops between Cerebral Cortex and the Subthalmic Area in Parkinson's Disease
Noa Fogelson,David Williams,Marina A. J. Tijssen,Gerard van Bruggen,Hans Speelman,Peter Brown +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the extent to which functional circuits coupling cortical and sub-thalamic activity are multiple and segregated by frequency in untreated Parkinson's disease (PD) was investigated, where EEG and local field potentials (LFPs) from macroelectrodes inserted into the subthalamic nucleus area (SA) in nine awake patients following functional neurosurgery for PD were studied after overnight withdrawal of medication.
