Neurostimulation for Parkinson's Disease with Early Motor Complications
W. M. M. Schuepbach,Jörn Rau,Karina Knudsen,Jens Volkmann,Paul Krack,Lars Timmermann,Thomas D. Hälbig,Helke Hesekamp,S. M. Navarro,Niklaus Meier,Daniela Falk,Maximilian Mehdorn,S. Paschen,Mohammad Maarouf,Michael T. Barbe,Gereon R. Fink,Andreas Kupsch,Doreen Gruber,G.-H. Schneider,Eric Seigneuret,Andrea Kistner,Patrick Chaynes,Fabienne Ory-Magne,C. Brefel Courbon,Jan Vesper,Alfons Schnitzler,Lars Wojtecki,Jean-Luc Houeto,Benoit Bataille,David Maltête,P. Damier,Sylvie Raoul,F. Sixel-Doering,D. Hellwig,Alireza Gharabaghi,Rejko Krüger,M. O. Pinsker,Florian Amtage,J. Regis,Tatiana Witjas,Stéphane Thobois,Patrick Mertens,Manja Kloss,Andreas Hartmann,Wolfgang H. Oertel,Bart Post,Hans Speelman,Yves Agid,Carmen Schade-Brittinger,Günther Deuschl +49 more
TL;DR: Subthalamic stimulation was superior to medical therapy in patients with Parkinson's disease and early motor complications and time with good mobility and no dyskinesia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dopamine-dependent changes in the functional connectivity between basal ganglia and cerebral cortex in humans
D Williams,Marina A. J. Tijssen,G van Bruggen,A Bosch,Angelo Insola,V. Di Lazzaro,Paolo Mazzone,A. Oliviero,Angelo Quartarone,Hans Speelman,Peter Brown +10 more
TL;DR: The basal ganglia may receive multiple cortical inputs at frequencies <30 Hz and, in the presence of dopaminergic activity, produce a high frequency drive back to the cerebral cortex, in particular the supplementary motor area (SMA).
Journal ArticleDOI
Expression of human immunodeficiency virus antigen (HIV-Ag) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid during acute and chronic infection.
Jaap Goudsmit,DeborahA. Paul,J. M. A. Lange,Hans Speelman,Jan van der Noordaa,HayoJ. Van Der Helm,Frank de Wolf,Leon G. Epstein,WillyJ.A. Krone,EricCh. Wolters,JamesM. Oleske,R. A. Coutinho +11 more
TL;DR: Its persistence or reappearance seems to correlate with clinical, immunological, and neurological deterioration, and the findings suggest that HIV-Ag appears early and transiently in primary HIV infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Declining incidence of AIDS dementia complex after introduction of zidovudine treatment.
Peter Portegies,J. de Gans,J. M. A. Lange,M. M. A. Derix,Hans Speelman,Margreet Bakker,Sven A. Danner,Jaap Goudsmit +7 more
TL;DR: The incidence of AIDS dementia complex in patients with AIDS declined after the introduction of systematic treatment with zidovudine; theAIDS dementia complex might be prevented by inhibiting viral replication in the central nervous system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Different Functional Loops between Cerebral Cortex and the Subthalmic Area in Parkinson's Disease
Noa Fogelson,David Williams,Marina A. J. Tijssen,Gerard van Bruggen,Hans Speelman,Peter Brown +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the extent to which functional circuits coupling cortical and sub-thalamic activity are multiple and segregated by frequency in untreated Parkinson's disease (PD) was investigated, where EEG and local field potentials (LFPs) from macroelectrodes inserted into the subthalamic nucleus area (SA) in nine awake patients following functional neurosurgery for PD were studied after overnight withdrawal of medication.
