Journal ArticleDOI
A mutation in a case of early onset narcolepsy and a generalized absence of hypocretin peptides in human narcoleptic brains
Christelle Peyron,Juliette Faraco,William J. Rogers,Beth Ripley,Sebastiaan Overeem,Sebastiaan Overeem,Yves Charnay,Sona Nevsimalova,Michael S. Aldrich,David Reynolds,Roger L. Albin,Robin Li,Marcel Hungs,Mario Pedrazzoli,Muralidhara Padigaru,Melanie H. Kucherlapati,Jun Fan,Richard A. Maki,Gert Jan Lammers,Constantin Bouras,Raju Kucherlapati,Seiji Nishino,Emmanuel Mignot +22 more
TL;DR: In situ hybridization of the perifornical area and peptide radioimmunoassays indicated global loss of hypocretins, without gliosis or signs of inflammation in all human cases examined, indicating most cases of human narcolepsy are associated with a deficient hypocretin system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison between an African town and a neighbouring village shows delayed, but not decreased, sleep during the early stages of urbanisation
Andrew D. Beale,Mario Pedrazzoli,Bruno S B Gonçalves,Felipe Beijamini,Nubia E. Duarte,Kieren J. Egan,Kristen L. Knutson,Malcolm von Schantz,Laura C. Roden +8 more
TL;DR: The data support the hypothesis that access to electricity delays sleep timing, and the higher sleep quality in the urban population also suggests that some aspects of industrialisation are beneficial to sleep.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of the length polymorphism in the human Per3 gene with the delayed sleep-phase syndrome: does latitude have an influence upon it?
Danyella Silva Pereira,Sergio Tufik,Fernando Mazzilli Louzada,Ana Amélia Benedito-Silva,Alberto Remesar Lopez,Nelson A. M. Lemos,Anna Ligia Korczak,Vânia D'Almeida,Mario Pedrazzoli +8 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that latitude has a role in the influence of hPer3 gene polymorphism on delayed sleep-phase syndrome and confirm previous data showing its association with morningness-eveningness tendencies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clock Polymorphisms and Circadian Rhythms Phenotypes in a Sample of the Brazilian Population
Mario Pedrazzoli,F. M. Louzada,Danyella Silva Pereira,Ana Amélia Benedito-Silva,Alberto Remesar Lopez,Bruno Jacson Martynhak,Anna Ligia Korczak,Bruna Del Vechio Koike,A.A. Barbosa,Vania D'Almeida,Sergio Tufik +10 more
TL;DR: The results show that there is no association between either polymorphism T3111C or T257G in the Clock gene with diurnal preference or delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), and it is unlikely that this full allele correspondence affects Clock gene expression.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased hypocretin-1 (orexin-a) levels in cerebrospinal fluid of rats after short-term forced activity
TL;DR: Examining the circadian differences in response to forced activity and homeostatic challenges on hypocretin-1 levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of rats concluded that despite the relation between hypocretins, stress and sleep regulation reported in the literature, short-term total sleep deprivation, immobilization and cold exposure did not induce increases in CSF Hcrt-1 Levels.
